Mihoshi’s magic had done more than just change Ranma’s past. It changed the entire world. When Nabiki had wished that Nodoka had a reason for going with Genma on the ten year training trip so she too could train Ranma it made more than just the magic of Jusenkyo and the wacky things Ranma encountered reality. An entire separate world of magical beings coexisting with the human world came into existence and Ranma’s family played a very major role in that new world.
Ranma was no longer the son of a martial artist crazed on creating the perfect heir to his obscure school of martial arts. Sure, Genma was still bound and determined to be father to the world’s greatest martial artist but his mother had plans for him as well. For you see, Ranma was now part of a family bathed in magic. Nodoka’s family were dragons. They were mystical shape shifting beings sworn to protect all things from the magical world from evil beings, spirits, and humans that sought to do them harm. His mother was a born protector and so was Ranma. It was a destiny he could not escape. Ranma was heir to the mantel of the Japanese Dragon.
Nodoka Saotome came from a long line of noble dragons. Both her mother’s family and father’s family were full blooded dragons. Her father’s family went back for over a thousand years protecting the Japanese countryside, and eventually its cities, from magical creatures and humans that wished to cause harm to peaceful magical beings and humans. They were purebred Japanese dragons. Her mother’s family went back just as far as her father’s. However, where her father’s family was steeped in Japanese traditions her mother’s family was steeped in European traditions. Her mother was a purebred Welsh dragon. Both Nodoka and Ranama were a mixture of the two families. Their dragon form looked much like Nodoka’s mother but their coloring came from her father’s side of the family. Nodoka’s dragon form was a deep purple with elegant horns like her paternal grandmother while Ranma’s dragon form was a bright fiery red of Nodoka’s father with the regal golden markings of his grandmother.
Nodoka had been quite open with her husband about who and what she was from the first day they met. It was a move that her family did not approve of but it had to be done of Genma was to believe that the man he called sensei was actually a tiny dragonet who, while not evil because dragons just do not have it in them to be evil, was a thorn in the side of the World Dragon Council because of his lecherous side. It was such acts that brought Nodoka to where Genma and Soun were traveling with Happosai as he conducted panty raids on the unsuspecting homes of innocent female humans. Eighteen months later Soun married his childhood sweetheart with Genma and Nodoka marrying six months later, with Soun an expectant father, and that’s when two drunken human men promised to join their families together through the union of their children much to Nodoka’s dismay.
For four years Genma tried hard to get Nodoka pregnant. He wanted what Soun had twice over, a child and most importantly a son. Four years after they were married Soun and Nodoka had their only child, the son they named Ranma. Both Nodoka and Genma hoped and prayed that Ranma would take after their respective families. Nodoka wanted Ranma to be the next in a long proud line of dragons while Genma wanted the dragon gene to skip Ranma and leave him human. Six years later Genma’s worst nightmare came true when a simple burp out of Ranma turned into full fledged fire setting the kitchen tablecloth on fire. Genma scared of his wife’s dragon abilities and scared of what his son would become under her teachings and those of a dragon master decided it was high time to take his son on a trip far away from Nodoka.
However, Nodoka would not hear of it. She just would not hear of her husband taking her son away from her without her consent. In fact, Nodoka insisted, no she demanded, that she travel with Genma and Ranma on their journey and together both mother and father would train Ranma. Nodoka convinced Genma that Ranma would need skills in the martial arts in order to fight the types of magical creatures he would deal with when he took the position as Japanese Dragon. Reluctantly, Genma gave into his wife and for the next ten years the family of three traveled the Japanese and Chinese countrysides.
