Sakura groaned as she got herself up, aching from the hard bedding and shivering in the pre-dawn chill, then stared at the unfamiliar surroundings as things gradually began to register.
She had failed and was to be sent back to the Academy. Sasuke had completely rejected her, calling her useless. She'd gone to the registrar's office and started filling out paperwork, her eyes filling with tears at the complete level of Fail she'd managed in a single day.
She'd just sort of gone on auto-pilot.
"Wha?" managed Sakura as she looked around.
"Oi, pinkie's awake," said some woman's voice.
"Good, bout time," said another woman.
Sakura blearily looked at the two who'd spoken. The room had six bunks. The two other women looked... rough.
"Still think she's awfully young," said the one with an eyepatch. "Might be from that ninja village, but her reach still ain't gonna be that good."
"Eh?" asked Sakura.
"Not a morning person, eh? Well, we can certainly fix that," said the other woman.
"Wha happen?" asked Sakura. "Where?"
Eyepatch gave a short laugh. "Another one. Damn, I knew it."
"Apparently," said the other woman. "Look, girl. You've signed up for a four-year in the Fire Daimyo's conscription forces. I'll bet there was a boy involved, right?"
"Uhm, yeah, wait - what?" asked Sakura.
"You're in boot camp, luv," said Eyepatch. "You'll be spending the next four years learning how to use a sword, bow, and spear. Mainly bow and spear. Welcome to 4th Regiment - the Daimyo's Valkri - we set sail in two weeks."
"WHAT?!" asked a properly horrified Sakura.
