"We did," said the blonde boy who was otherwise meditating.
Sasuke blinked as what he was seeing fully registered. Which was the blonde kid seated in a half lotus position with his left leg coiled underneath him. Balanced on his sword, which was stuck point-first into the ground.
"Balance training?" asked Sasuke.
"That and purifying chakra," said Naruto.
"Ah," said Sasuke, wondering what that meant. Meh, he'd ask later. "So, despite failing, we're a team anyway? I was wondering whether to go missing-nin or back to the Academy."
"Those who betray their comrades are lowly indeed," said Naruto as he opened his eyes for the first time since Sasuke had arrived. "As for the fate of Team 7 - I'm told politics was involved."
"Hate politics," mumbled Sasuke.
"Hear that," said Naruto in an agreeable manner.
"So why does some high level politician want Team 7 to pass?" asked Sasuke.
"They thought you might go missing-nin, and they wanted to keep tabs on me," said Naruto, closing his eyes again. "Apparently someone blabbed about you buying up lots of camping supplies."
"So what about Sakura?" asked Sasuke after he'd thought about that a bit and decided he wouldn't buy from THAT supplier ever again.
"No clue, haven't heard a word," said Naruto. "She gonna show up, Kakashi-sensei?"
Sasuke was about to point out that their jonin wasn't anywhere nearby when said jonin appeared out of nowhere. Right behind him. Causing his sarcastic retort to come out as a startled yelp and for Sasuke Uchiha to practically have a heart attack.
"Sorry," said the didn't-sound-sorry-at-all Kakashi Hatake.
Sasuke scowled angrily and stepped over to where he could put his back against a tree. "So... Sakura?"
"When she was filling out paperwork for returning to the Ninja Academy, apparently she was still somewhat emotionally... emotional," said Kakashi, trying to find a way to put it and failing.
"So... she's not coming?" asked Sasuke. "A two genin team after all?"
"Well, two genin and a talking sword," pointed out Kakashi.
"Oh, I'm part of the team?" came a voice as a pale shape slowly formed in the air.
"I can see her? Sort of?" asked Sasuke.
"She's strengthened her ties to the blade," said Naruto, still with closed eyes and the same odd position he'd been in. "If she gets strong enough, she'll eventually be able to manifest a full image."
"I'm sorry," said the girl's voice, the white blob seeming to shrink in on itself.
"Don't worry about it," said Naruto. "One of the guys back at the temple had one like this. Except his Zantetsuken had the spirit of a dragon in it."
"So what did happen to Sakura?" asked Sasuke.
"Well, there's a chance of her coming back, but right now she's sort of busy," said Kakashi. "She didn't fill out the paperwork for rejoining the Ninja Academy. It was probably a mistake, otherwise she wouldn't have joined -"
