Mischief Fragment - Replay: Sword and Retainer Finishing School [Episode 246007]

by Kestral

Sasuke Uchiha stared at Kakashi Hatake for a moment, then took his pinky finger and made a brief show of cleaning one ear canal. He considered for a moment his possible responses, then went ahead with the obvious one. "She did what?"

"Signed legal paperwork indicating that she was your clan retainer," said Kakashi. "Vassal, squire, and so on and so forth. She must have run across a reference in a book on clan law and seized it as an opportunity."

"Okay, well," began Sasuke.

"Unfortunately she apparently mentioned it to a few people, word got around, and you've now got six clan retainers," said Kakashi. "Congratulations."

"Uhm. Right." Sasuke had the feeling this would be a complete clusterdump. "Are these 'retainers'..."

"I understand that all six were part of your fanclub in the Academy and all five of the others failed their genin test," said Kakashi.

Sasuke considered that briefly.

"Clan retainers? Personal retainers?" asked Naruto. "What kind of training are you signing them up for?"

"Eh?" asked Kakashi and Sasuke.

Sasuke turned his full attention to Naruto. "What do you mean - I can sign them up for training?"

"One of my missions I was at the Daimyo's Court, there was a problem with a ghost," said Naruto. "Not like you, Hinata. This was one of the malicious kind."

"Ah, yes," said Hinata.

"Anyway, one of the minor lords had just gotten a retainer and was debating on the kinds of training he could send 'em off on," said Naruto. "Apparently there are all kinds of things you can sign a 'personal vassal' off for - some of 'em take years to learn."

Sasuke blinked. "How do I look into that?"

Sakura was VERY unhappy as apparently the argument she'd had with her mother about it had gotten loud and public enough that others had picked up about her plans.

Which had resulted in Ami, Kasumi, and three others stealing her idea!

"Oh, good news," said a chunin paperwork-specialist as he came into the room with five of them glaring daggers at each other. The sixth merely looked as if she had a headache. Or was embarassed to be there. "The paperwork was filed for you to become personal vassals of Sasuke Uchiha and that means you all are clan retainers. Here's your assignments."

"Assignments?" asked Sakura.

"Yes, apparently Uchiha-san was kind enough to fill out the forms for your advanced training," said the chunin. "I guess that bit about rebuilding his clan to its former power was accurate. Anyway - Ami Kurazaki?"

"Yes?" asked Ami.

The chunin held up a small brochure to which a card had been stapled. "Ami Kurazaki is to arrive at the Irontree Citadel no later than three days from now for apprenticeship as a scullery maid."

Ami's voice went flat. "What?"

"Kasumi Kadomara?" asked the chunin.

"Uhm," said the named girl uncertainly.

The chunin put Ami's brochure aside and lifted a second up. "Uchiha-san has put you down for training in clerical studies and there's an opening in the accounting division of Port Yami's exchequer. Three day trip, so you'll want to start out immediately. Fuki Nokia?"

"Yes?" asked Fuki, sounding very uncertain.

"Fuki Nokia will be trained as a courier and you're in luck!" The chunin put down Kasumi's brochure next to Ami's and then added Fuki's as well.

"Why do I not feel lucky?" asked Fuki.

"No idea," said the chunin. "There's a courier company called Fastwind. One of their runners is in town and agreed to take you on as an apprentice. Their headquarters is in Tanzaku Gai so you'll be heading there."

"There must be some mistake," said Ami, picking hers up. "Training to take place... FIVE YEARS?!"

"No mistake," said the chunin. "And yeah - standard non-ninja forces apprenticeship. Then there's a test of your skills. The Uchiha clan is paying for your training of course, but food and such are all dependent on your trainers. Kanae Yagi?"

"Uhm, yes?" asked Kanae, standing and bowing to the chunin.

"You're heading to the Land of Iron. You won't learn any samurai techniques but you can certainly develop your skills in kenjutsu there."

"I understand," said Kanae.

"Wait, why does she get that?" asked Ami.

"She specified on her application, line 24, that she wanted to further her combat training," said the chunin. "Apparently Uchiha-san approved. Anyway, Sakura Haruno?"

Sakura gulped but went ahead and followed Kanae's example of not spending time being angry about this development. She was curious though - what would Sasuke have her training in?
