"All systems ready," said another shadowy figure.
"MFMF?!" said Sakura through her gag.
"Actually it's there to keep you from biting through your tongue," said one of the shadowy figures. "The tube will put the medicine directly in your tummy. Take heart though. If you do well as a Test Subject, eventually you may make it to Lab Assistant like us!"
"MFF!!!" managed Sakura as one of the shadowy figures came shuffling forward into the light and she could see him clearly. "MFFF!"
"My name is Igor," said the twisted hunchback with what was intended to be a reassuring smile. "I was in the same boat as you a few years ago. I spent four years as a Test Subject before there was an opening for a Lab Assistant."
"MFFFGHRF!" said Sakura, testing the restraints frantically.
"I know, I know," said Igor in a friendly manner. "Don't worry though. Our survival rate has more than doubled. Why, three out of five survive but don't get any results at all. Of course, it's really a pity about the two of five - but it does show an improvement, doesn't it?"
"GRFFFFF!"
"No, the restraints are to make it easy for the tubes to attach. Nod your head if you want to be sedated. I'd recommend it actually, the process can be pretty damn uncomfortable," said Igor.
"GMFFFMFMMF!"
"'uncomfortable'? Understatement," said the still shadowy figure.
"Well, if you insist," said Igor. "I really think you should reconsider though. Once that medicine hits your stomach, you're gonna cramp BAD for the next four to six hours and everything inside you is gonna try to go out the other end fast. That's why you've got the hookups there after all. You've got to be nice and clean for the procedure."
"Introducing chemicals," said the still-shadowy figure as he adjusted some knobs and threw a few levers.
"Don't worry about it," said Igor with a little chuckle as he patted Sakura atop her head. "Everyone's had to go through this. Well, except the doctors. And administration. That's one reason it's entirely a volunteer operation as we try to understand how some of these things work."
Sakura was protesting when she felt the first cramp hit and stopped. A cold greasy-feeling sweat began to break out over her body. "MF MFFFF!"
"Yeah, that'll be the reaction soon enough," admitted Igor. "We'll have to leave you alone though. The smell gets pretty bad despite the tubes."
"Fmmm?" asked Sakura.
"Sure," said Igor, smiling and pushing a button on the IV drip. "Good night, Test Subject 404. Remember - this is for SCIENCE!"
