As the men of the Musk dynasty could have told them, animals that are turned into humans by the pools of Jusenkyou normally bear a strong resemblance to their former selves. This does not go so far that they have fur or tails or other obvious animal parts - it's far more subtle than that. A certain cast to the facial features, perhaps, or a distinctive hair colour; some mannerisms that are not, by themselves, overly remarkable; a greater propensity for enhanced characteristics, such as speed, agility, flexibility, strength, or acute senses. Nothing that would make an unaware observer realize that these human beings used to be animals - but if you did know, you could definitely see the connection.
Thus each of the senshi found herself in a body that, while human, was not identical to their previous incarnation. There was a resemblance, such as a relative might have, but as they looked at each other, they could see the differences as well. All the former felines shared a lithe, flexible, well-muscled physique; slightly elongated canines (not unlike a certain boy, who was lying in a faint on a nearby cliff); a distinctive feline cast to their features, especially their eyes; just the hint of a point to their ears; and a sort of innate, graceful slinkiness to their movements. Hotaru was now the largest of the group, towering over everybody else, while Ami was positively tiny.
Usagi's ears were just slightly on the large side - not so much sticking out, but sticking up. Her front teeth were just short of what you'd call "buckteeth", and she had acquired a habit of hopping and skipping, instead of walking. She wrinkled her nose repeatedly and wondered whether there were any carrots left in Ranma's pack.
Setsuna, Rei, and Makoto showed their avian heritage through their sharply ridged, slightly beak-like noses; their hair, which stuck out from their heads, like a crown of feathers; their thin, lightweight build; and a slight awkwardness in walking, as if it was not their natural mode of movement. Setsuna blinked a lot, as her large, light-sensitive eyes were not meant for extended daytime operation.
Haruka's face was a little longer than in her previous incarnation, and it looked somewhat canine, even when she wasn't panting unconsciously.
Michiru radiated a sultry and mischievous air. Her wavy, reddish-brown hair was full and lustrous, and her face betrayed just a bit of the fox, mainly around the nose. Her most distinctive mark were two black dots upon her forehead. She was the very picture of a Kitsune.
They all remembered that as humans they were supposed to wear clothes, but after spending such a long time as animals, this particular taboo was no longer quite as deeply ingrained in their psyches as it once was. Thus they made no particular effort to cover themselves, when Ranma started stirring.
When Ranma sat up with a groan and blinked in astonishment at the host of beautiful naked girls around him (or her, at the moment), Ami couldn't hold back. The tiny girl with the obviously natural blue hair pounced at the transformed boy, curled up on his lap and rubbed her face against his chest and the top of his newly acquired breasts, purring. "Oh Rrranma-sama, I'm so glad you'rrre okay!"
It should be mentioned that Ami was a curious case among the reincarnated Senshi, since she was the only one of them, who had retained the memories of her life as an animal, before becoming aware of her previous life. All the others had come into their awareness suddenly, as if waking up in their new bodies with no knowledge of what they were and how they came to be there. Ami remembered, though. She remembered being born as a helpless, sightless kitten; remembered the loving care of her cat mother; remembered growing up with her brothers and sisters until one day some human had apparently decided that there were too many damn cats around the place. She hadn't really understood what was happening, at the time, nor did she know what became of her siblings. All she had known was that she was suddenly alone, helpless, frightened, and hungry - and then Ranma had come. He had adopted her, fed her, protected her, and made her feel loved again. From that moment on, Ami Mizuno had been Ranma's loving pet cat.
Perhaps the exceptional mental abilities of Sailor Mercury were the cause, but when the memories of her former life came back to her, it was not in a sudden rush, displacing all memories of her current incarnation, as it was for the other Senshi. Whereas the others were basically the same people they had been, now wearing the bodies of animals, Ami was for the most part a cat who remembered that she used to be someone else. While the others had formed strong bonds to the boy, as he unknowingly domesticated them, Ami's feeling went much further. He had saved her life and taken her in. He was her... there were no human words for what he was to her. Words like "master" or "owner" were ugly and crude, smacking of slavery and dominance, which couldn't be further from the truth, whereas the word "beloved" was too weak to express the depth and complexity of her feelings for him. You needed a word that meant "parent" and "husband" and "brother" and "idol" all at the same time. It was perfectly simple to express in Cat, but no human language had the words.
For these reasons it was perfectly natural for Ami to place herself on Ranma's lap and rub against his... her body. The superficial changes, such as the breasts or the feminine face, were mere trivialities to Ami. He still smelled like Ranma, and that was good enough for her. How often she had been carried inside his shirt, peeking out of the top, feeling the warmth of his body and absorbing his scent with every pore of her body. She could never mistake Ranma, no matter what body he wore.
Thus it was that the Jusenkyou guide returned to find a very nervous-looking girl in a gi looking down at an even smaller, blue-haired girl on her lap, who was rubbing up against her and purring.
"Huh? What's the hot water fo- Woof! Woof!"
"See? She no longer naked human girl, so no more problem, yes?"
