He was late.
Which meant that Naruto would have gotten bored while waiting for this mission to hunt down a strange animal got started.
Which meant...
KA-POFF! went a plume of smoke not too far away.
Which meant that the Hokage would have something to say to him later about NOT leaving Naruto standing around getting bored.
The forest blurred around him as Kakashi used rapid-move techniques (he knew four) to get to where his team was assembled.
Sakura... plastered against a wall, her hair sticking up at odd angles. Okay, not a good sign.
Sasuke had drawn a kunai and had settled into a 'ready' stance, looking all around him in quick movements.
Naruto was sitting next to a burning scroll and scratching his head. "I was so sure I had it that time."
"Sakura? Are you all right?" asked Kakashi as he approached the girl who'd recently been convinced that she was a tree.
"It's still here," said Sakura, trying to look in all directions at once.
"It's okay," said Naruto to a set of bushes. "You can dismiss yourself whenever you want and the mean girl won't try and hurt you again."
"It was an accident!" seconded Sakura.
The bushes rustled and something came out.
