"The biggest danger I spotted during my support was a group called the Wolkenritter. What they serve is an object of power called the Book Of Darkness. The name is descriptive, Kuregata shows that several civilizations and literally billions of lives have been lost to this thing."
"Can we obtain or lock away this book?" asked one of the ANBU.
"No," said Naruto. "The Book Of Darkness feeds on its wielder and the Wolkenritter's only purposes are to complete the book and guard the wielder. When the book is finished, it destroys everything. Here, let me show you."
Kuregata shifted forms, going from the "rest" disc to a configuration that hadn't been shown before. The large muzzle fired and a hole appeared in space. Naruto stepped through.
A moment later and the Hokage and both ANBU stepped through warily.
The world WAS dead. You could feel it in the thin air, see it in the dust and rock. There were chunks of the world tumbling overhead in a night sky that was too similar to their own for comfort.
"This world is one of those destroyed by the Book Of Darkness," said Naruto, picking up a bit of debris from the ground. When the three others looked more closely they could see that it was a part of a crib.
"I see," said the Hokage, taking the piece of debris from Naruto to examine it more carefully then looking over the scene. "Hawk?"
"It is not genjutsu," said Hawk. "This is all real. There is nothing alive within range of my sight except ourselves."
"I can only hold the door open briefly," apologized Naruto. "Normally I use Knight Move to go from one position to another within a world instead of crossing worlds."
The Hokage nodded and inclined his head back to the door.
Naruto yawned, as morning came entirely too early. He was used to operating at night anymore, finding somewhere secure to sleep, and then the hunt.
There were enemies out there. Real enemies. Enemies like the Book Of Darkness and the Wolkenritter.
What did he need a team for, anyway? He was a sniper with a skillset that made him very capable in that regard.
And that Konohamaru he'd met yesterday, what was up with that kid?
"Where IS he?" asked the pinkette.
"Who?" asked Sasuke.
"NARUTO! What was up with that outfit anyway?" asked Sakura huffing and letting out a deep breath.
"Hopeless," said Sasuke dismissively.
"He certainly is," said Sakura.
"No, YOU," said Sasuke.
"Me?!" asked Sakura. "What do you mean? We've been here two hours and neither Naruto or our sensei have shown up?"
"Naruto's been here at least an hour," said Sasuke.
"WHAT?!" squeaked Sakura.
"Actually I've been here all the time," said Naruto drily. "Still, good job in spotting me." Maybe this won't be a complete waste.
"Hnn," said Sasuke, making a note that Naruto seemed to have developed some useful skills.
"WHAT?!" squeaked Sakura, looking wildly around after she managed to let go of the ceiling.
Naruto dropped the camouflage effect, revealing he was in a corner.
"WHAT?!" said Sakura as she spotted him. "HOW?! WHY?! WHERE?!"
"So," said Naruto, eyeing the other two members of his team. About the responses he expected. "Naruto Uzumaki. My dream is to protect this village. My likes are improving my skills. My hobby is... classified. My dislikes are anything threatening those I consider precious to me."
Kakashi frowned under his mask. NOT the response he'd expected. Odd. And why did Naruto look more fifteen than twelve? He was taller than Sasuke now.
Well, couldn't be important, could it?
