Mischief Fragment: Sniper Targets [Episode 248476]

by Kestral

He was using [Camouflage] - which caused him to blend into his surroundings to such a degree that even a Belkan Knight actively looking for him would have trouble finding him.

He was also running [Wide Area Search] in semi-stationary mode. They drifted, and therefore weren't completely camouflaged, but were still pretty hard to find.

Combining the two had him nearly completely hidden but able to monitor an area.

He'd connected with a group of Mid-Childans, a behind-the-scenes group that found his abilities of interest. Back then, he'd only known that the world he'd ended up on had a small group of humanity facing overwhelming odds. He'd needed the resources to protect them.

Vampires, ghouls, werewolves, zombies, the list went on. What they all had in common was that they regarded humans as prey - something to eat.

Naruto knew he was missing some of his earlier innocence. It was hard to maintain anything like innocence in that environment. Running into his first 'blood farm' had been eye-opening and life-changing. A group of captured humans who were kept naked and filthy in cages, with the vampires feeding on one until near-death and then returning them to their cage. The victims always hoping that either someone else would get taken, or that one of the vampires would slip up and allow them to finally die and escape that hell.

Now he was back in Konohagakure and he could admit he was having trouble trying to fit back into the usual day-to-day.

Kuregata shifted in his grip.

Naruto's attention snapped back to the Wide Area Search. "Sniper Mode," he whispered.

Kuregata shifted around, becoming the long barrelled weapon. He wasn't sure about the other Intelligent Devices, but Kuregata's modes operated by shifting percentages. Sniper Mode shifted speed to accuracy and impact force. Close Range shifted accuracy and impact force to speed. Spear Mode was for up close and personal. Chain Sword, when he needed to use it, was loud and sacrificed range for doing lots of damage.

"Stun effect only," breathed Naruto. "Armor Pierce."

[Stun only. Armor Piercing Round.]

"Bang," breathed Naruto.

The shot went out and suddenly there was someone in the way of the shot. As it was a homing round, it made a quick set of ninety-degree turns to avoid the obstacle.

Tenten and Lee had been creeping forward, watching the forest around them.

Tenten had gasped a bit at seeing their target, and seeing NEJI unconscious being tended to by their target.

"This is bad," whispered Lee.

"Danger!" said Might Guy, suddenly there.

Lee and Tenten leapt away, Lee ending up in the same area with the target and the target's guard and Tenten leaping in the opposite direction.

She DID get a good look at a white ball of something as it tried to get past Guy-sensei and Guy blurred as he whipped out his nunchaku and finally caught the orb.

Tenten bit her lip in annoyance, then ran to the shelter of a tree so that she could use it for cover and attempt to hit the target. If she got a clean shot, this mission would be a success despite the mess it had deteriorated into.

"Where is he?" asked Might Guy, ignoring the fight that had developed between Sasuke Uchiha and Rock Lee. Neji was unconscious, Tenten was hiding and waiting for an opportunity to attack, Lee was occupied in his beatdown of Sasuke.

"Ahhhhhh HA!" said someone as they attacked... HIM? He simply palmed the large-foreheaded girl's head and held her at bay, only pausing to remove all her sharp-pointy objects. Most of his attention was on the surroundings.

There! A slight distortion in the air.

"Tenten! Four-thirty from your position, the hidden attacker is using that to track you," said Might Guy, tapping the pink-haired girl and sending her into unconsciousness.

A kunai went through the distortion, hitting it perfectly dead-center. It dispelled, but Guy immediately detected two more moving into positions.

"You are in range of my divinations, two palms!"

Might Guy grabbed one of the target's arms before the blow could strike. "You know, you're supposed to be the helpless VIP. Not a participant."

"Oh, right," said the now-chastened Hyuga girl.

A moment later, a blunted kunai sped for the Hyuga girl's head and was promptly deflected by another white ball.

"Got you," declared Might Guy, blurring into motion.

"Crap," declared Naruto, as he went into motion himself. "Kuregata!"

[Close Range Mode. Flash Move. Target Analysis.]

His hiding place exploded into leaves and pulped wood as someone impacted it. Fortunately, he wasn't there at the time but as he'd had to drop Camouflage - the attacker was reorienting on him already.

[Danger Level High. Master Vampire Level Attacker. No Supernatural Aura,] noted Kuregata as it finished reassembling into the "bullpup" more compact design for narrow corridors and close-range combat.

"Burst spray. Stun Only. Homing Round."

[Homing Burst.]

A spray of seven white spheres went towards the jonin, who neatly avoided them, and then apparently realized they were turning to re-orient on him. He actually laughed as he started avoiding them and using a nunchaku to swat one after the other out of the air.

"Ring Bind," ordered Naruto. "Burst!"

The spray of white orbs went out, and this time one snagged the nunchaku and held it in place when the same swatting tactic was used.

Might Guy grinned at the sport of this opponent. Though only a genin, the boy was adapting quickly and efficiently. Faced with one such as himself, he was completely occupied though. Leaving Tenten and Lee to accomplish the mission objective.

Which, of course, was exactly the point of the whole exercise.

Three genin against three genin and a jonin were pretty much doomed to failure. Though this raw genin had managed to knock Neji out.

Guy suspected that Neji was not going to take this at all well.

Lee was enjoying himself, mostly. Tenten was performing as expected, focusing solely on "assassinating" the target.

He opened the First and Second Gate and ripped the binding seals that had managed to latch onto him. The boy was clearly startled, and was now bringing his device around - which flew apart and became a spear with a glowing tip.

Naturally, at his current speed, the boy couldn't react quite fast enough and took a circle kick to the chest. Again, Guy found himself intrigued as he knew from the feel of the impact that something had formed a protective layer at the point of impact. That it had happened so quickly indicated it was either completely enveloping the genin - or that it was an automatic defense. Either was interesting.

The boy was an expert with that weapon. He was blocking blows that should have sent him into unconsciousness, but each was delivered with enough force to severely rattle him. And when the genin had been backed up to a tree, he did another shunshin-like manuever so that the tree was felled instead of him and he'd reappeared in a position to strike from the rear. Yes, quite promising.

Ah, finally. An opening. An uppercut should send this otherwise promising genin to slumberland and he could learn from the experience.
