Mischief Fragment: Sniper Task [Episode 248602]

by Kestral

Naruto wasn't used to being overmatched like this. It really hadn't happened all that often.

So when the attacker managed to get inside his guard, he'd begun pulling out moves that he technically knew but hadn't practiced to the extent he had the more often required ones.

He was now regretting that lack, though really against the opponents he was used to facing - being in very close was NOT a good idea.

Ghasts could paralyze you with a touch. Vampires could infect you, as could werewolves. Zombies could infect you and were exceedingly disgusting in close range. The best tactic for dealing with ANY of them was to deal them massive amounts of damage from a distance. Even a Master Vampire's regeneration could be overloaded if you hit them with enough damage.

This last attack had been worthy of a Master Vampire. Enough impact force leaked through the Barrier Jacket that Naruto was pretty sure that if he hadn't had that bit of mystic armor, he'd not only be minus his head - that part of his body might have been launched outside the village itself.

"Do you yield?" asked the jonin, settling into a ready stance from which any muscular twitch might unleash mayhem.

"If you hadn't used two teams, this wouldn't be so difficult," groaned Naruto, then using his tongue to probe his teeth to see how many had loosened.

"There is no dishonor in yielding in a test such as this, you have acquited yourself well for..." The jonin's voice trailed off. "Two teams?"

They had no identification on them, nothing to indicate who or what they were.

They were simply three jonin-level missing-nin as far as anyone would be able to tell.

"Magic Jar!" called out one, pointing a ceramic container in a particular direction. Mist erupted from behind a tree and streaked into the container.

"Ha! Let's see him copy THAT," said the jar holder as he sealed it.

"I still don't like it," said the second one. "Yeah, we can probably buy off our freedom for a pair of Hyuga eyes. It just all smells like 'trap' to me."

"Stop being paranoid," said the third.

"We're missing-nin, Jimo," replied the second. "Paranoid is in the job description."

"Kensuke's right, but we have to take this chance," said the first as he put the jar away.

"I really have a bad feeling abou-" began Kensuke before his head abruptly exploded.

"What the-" said the first as he leapt for cover. "Where did that come from?"

"Oh hell," said Jimo as he attempted to crawl through brush. "They killed Kenny."

"Bastards," replied the first ninja. "I'm not sensing any chakra other than ours in three hundred meters. Just little sparks from animals."

"Kensuke was a better sensor than you, and look what happened to him," said Jimo. "Maybe we should make a dash for the target, then onward till we cross the border."

"If I can just get a line on who did that," began the first.

Things went silent as Jimo listened. "Gen?"

More silence. Jimo cursed under his breath as he made his way to Gen's position. He sighed in relief as he found Gen leaning with his back to a tree. That sigh stopped abruptly as he found the ragged hole in Gen's chest.

Jimo's eyes went down to the jar secured by a cord to Gen's belt before the jar abruptly shattered and white mist shot out and towards a particular tree.

"Oh shit," said Jimo before everything abruptly went black.

Much later:

"One's just knocked out," explained Naruto. "You didn't need all three, did you?"

"We try to avoid headshots, Naruto," said Kakashi, frowning at his genin. "It makes identifying the nin involved a lot more difficult."
