He noticed, of course, that a young boy who was NOT permitted in the area had snuck in. He'd been aware, thanks to a few reports, of young Sasuke Uchiha getting fairly short-tempered with Naruto as the young jinchuriki had begun showing up with Shiva following him.
One of the hottest days of the summer, and Naruto had gone to the playground with Shiva. Stifling hot, horribly humid, and absolutely miserable. Hiruzen Sarutobi smiled at the memory. Shiva had done something, and ice and snow had quickly covered the playground. He'd gotten into a snowball fight with his grandson. Konohamaru had gotten the initial advantage until he'd summoned Enma the Monkey King.
Word had gotten back to Sasuke and the young Uchiha had been quite unhappy with having the "class idiot" turn out to be good at something. Well, he'd get over it.
"Summoning!" said Naruto, slapping a hand down on the small circle in one corner. Multi-colored light went up and then things SHIFTED.
Red circles of light formed, with fuuinjutsu sigils realigning and forming new sigils.
A shift in the air told him that Jiraiya had indeed come after word of the boy's accomplishments had reached him. Good.
"Ifrit?" asked Jiraiya, reading the center of the main circle as it lifted off the paper and flipped upward into the air like a coin being tossed.
"I cannot read the fiery letters," admitted the Hokage.
The disc imploded, becoming a fireball which expanded slowly to five times the size of a man. Then it shattered and a huge form slammed into the ground.
Hiruzen Sarutobi was aware of some chunin soiling himself, Mizuki if he remembered right. Most of the rest of the ninjas could have their reactions summed up in three simple words. "I want one."
A horned demon, flame sheeting up around him, whose face was a mask of fury as his gaze swept the area. Then he looked down at his summoner and the expression softened.
The massive demon of flame sank to one knee, still towering over the little boy, and nodded. Then he exploded in a column of flame that didn't actually burn anything.
Naruto got up, spotted the Hokage and came running over. "Ojiisan! I got Ifrit! Now I've got a summons for fire and for ice!"
"Very good, Naruto," said the Hokage. "Now, in the case of Ifrit - you shouldn't summon him as often as you do Shiva."
"I know Ojiisan!" said Naruto. "That's what he told me."
"Oh?" asked the Hokage.
"What did he tell you?" asked Jiraiya.
Naruto looked suspiciously at the old man.
"It's okay, Naruto. Jiraiya here is a friend of mine and an expert at fuuinjutsu," the Hokage assured him.
"Oh," said Naruto, mulling that over before nodding. "Ifrit don't want to be summoned unless there's a fight and you don't care if the area gets trashed. Or if there's heavy drinking. I don't have to keep Shiva back do I? She likes being here."
"And Shiva is welcome here as well," said the Hokage. Certainly the Ice Queen seemed to be well-behaved, though a few people glaring at Naruto had complained of sudden chills besetting them. They weren't hurt though, so if Shiva was willing to show restraint - there wasn't a problem.
"Okay," said Naruto.
"Can you summon Shiva now?" asked Jiraiya.
"No," said Naruto, shaking his head for emphasis. "Shiva says I can only do one per day until I'm older."
"How do you know that anyway? Did she start talking?" asked the Hokage.
"No, it's just kinda..." Naruto's voice trailed off as his face scrunched up as he thought about it. "I can kinda tell what they're trying to tell me. At least some of the time."
"Fine," said the Hokage. "An hour after classes."
Naruto sat down and wished he had a summons for ramen. That would be SO cool for school lunch period.
"You."
Naruto glanced up, his sandwich clenched in his mouth. "Mf?"
"You've got power. I want it."
"Mf?" asked Naruto, tilting his head to look at Sasuke and wonder what the heck this was.
"I was asking you nicely," said Sasuke.
At which point several girls got involved and started telling Naruto that if he had something Sasuke wanted - he better give it to him!
Naruto glared at Sasuke, taking his time to chew and swallow before giving the boy an answer. "No."
"I NEED that power," stated Sasuke. "It's not like YOU could use it."
"I only know how to summon friends," said Naruto. "If you had it, you'd just summon fangirls."
Sasuke winced as he suddenly saw him facing his brother, doing that summoning thing that Naruto had done yesterday... and getting one of the useless fangirls instead of something useful. No, it was his destiny to destroy That Man. He wouldn't settle for something useless.
"You better give Sasuke whatever you took from him!" declared one of his fangirls, moving forward with a hand reared back to strike.
"No!" said Naruto, deciding to be stubborn about it.
"Naruto? What happened? Your face is all swollen," asked the Hokage.
"Nothin'," said Naruto through a cracked mouth.
"I see," said the Hokage, knowing that his intervention could likely worsen things for the boy instead of making it better.
"Hope you gave as well as you got, kid," said Jiraiya.
"Are you going to summon Shiva today?" asked the Hokage.
"Nah, thought'a something," said Naruto. "Up late working on it. Shiva is ice. Ifrit is fire."
"Ice is a combination of Wind chakra and Water chakra," Jiraiya instructed Naruto. "So, I was wondering, if Shiva can use Wind or Water seperately."
"I don't think so," said Naruto after a brief pause. "I'm pretty sure she's specifically Ice."
"Okay, so are you trying a different element today?" asked the Hokage, glancing aside as he was now aware of Sasuke sneaking back to a vantage point. Followed by four girls? What were those chunin doing if they weren't securing a perimeter? Clearly, he had to have a word with a few people to clarify orders.
"Yeah, Ojiisan!" said Naruto, giving a thumb's up and writing a couple of things out on a scroll then flipping it out. "Ice. Fire. Now..."
