"I see. She is of the Main House, but without the Byakugan - she will never be the Heir."
The baby blinked violet eyes back at the adults, not understanding in the least.
Hiashi looked coldly down at his daughter. "Why does she not have the Byakugan?"
"Milord, that poisoning that took place six months ago that made your wife so ill?"
"That was responsible?" asked Hiashi.
"Most likely milord," agreed the medic-nin. "During the exam thereafter, I was able to determine that something had changed but not what."
"If the assassin were not already dead, I would kill him for this," said Hiashi. "Very well. We'll have to see what develops."
"It was amazing, Hiashi-sama! After the first strike, her eyes seemed to glow and Hanabi's jutsu collapsed."
"What are you saying then?" asked Hiashi.
"Hinata-sama does not possess the Byakugan, but when she goes through the same hand-seals - she activates an entirely new dojutsu! One that can counter any jutsu she focuses on, taking the chakra apart in a single glance!"
Hiashi considered that. Hinata still couldn't be Heir. She'd been a disappointment from birth in some respects, but he'd not focussed on her too much because of that birth defect. Now, apparently she had manifested something else.
"Very well, continue her training and devise new training to handle this new ability," commanded Hiashi.
"Sir," said the chunin.
"Hizashi," whispered Hiashi, his gaze going skyward. "Was this what you meant - that they had no idea what value Hinata still held?" They'd tried to kidnap her since she WAS a Hyuga, only to dump the girl as soon as they saw her eyes. Then they'd gone after her mother.
Things had not gone well, and Hiashi's brother had ended up sacrificing himself - dying in battle against the Kumo-nin.
Or had it been simply that as a Hyuga, she still held the genes for the Byakugan?
"So, we need to sort the genin out. Who do we put together?"
"The Nara, Akimichi, and Yamanaka trio are a natural. Asuma is a good solid jonin for the group."
"The dead last, top scoring kunoichi, and rookie of the year team is pretty obvious. Sasuke Uchiha is the rookie of the year. Naruto Uzumaki had the worst overall scores. Sakura Haruno was the top scoring kunoichi."
"Yeah, but less than five points difference between her scores and Hinata Hyuga's - if you tally in the taijutsu and the precise chakra control then the Hyuga girl comes out on top."
"What about Okoi? I thought she did better in taijutsu."
"Yeah, but everything else was pretty bad. I understand that there were some deaths in her family but the scores remain."
"We can't put Hinata and her 'Mystic Eyes' on the same team as Sasuke and his potential Sharingan."
"We'd be putting the jailor of the Nine-Tailed Fox on the same team with someone whose eyes take apart jutsu."
"Not seals?"
"No, that was determined. She can't tear apart fuuinjutsu as easily as she can other jutsu. She'd actually have to be trying to tear apart the seal and touching the boy to break it. IF she could do it. It required quite a lot of time for her to break even basic storage seals."
