Hinata didn't need to see that day, the shadow of that one day had echoed throughout her life.
Would Father have still been so disappointed in me, had that not taken his brother? Would Neji have grown up not hating the Main Family if his father had remained?
Hinata went back over her life, reviewing it. When the Village Hidden In The Clouds had sent a diplomatic team to work on some complicated treaty. Trade, information, cessation of hostilities - these were all considerations.
One day, nine years before she would become a genin, and there had not been a day since then in her life where it had not been an influence.
This Being says that I must be careful, but what would be wrong if that day had not happened?
Hinata considered that, her mind trying to work out what might be negative about such a thing happening.
Nothing occurred to her, and she was quite aware of the passage of time. How long would this offer remain while she hesitated? Would Naruto hesitate?
Hinata's mouth firmed. No. Naruto would charge ahead and do it. Naruto wasn't always right, but when had he ever backed down from a challenge?
"I have the wish," said Hinata.
"Oh do you?" said the old man. "That's splendid. Have you thought about what could go right, and what could go wrong?"
"Yes," said Hinata with a nod.
"Very well then," said the old man, taking a deep puff from his pipe and then blowing a small question-mark made of smoke out. "What is your wish?"
"I wish that the Kumo-nin attempt to kidnap me had never occurred," said Hinata.
There was a shudder of power rolling through the area, and Hinata abruptly vanished.
"Hmmm," said the old man, Toltiir in another guise. "How did that play out?"
