But at least she'd been able to scrape up the courage to stand up for him, to protect him for a few moments, and to finally tell him! That had to count for something, didn't it?
"Sort of, kind of. Too little too late though."
Hinata blinked. She was standing next to her body, the sky was strange, colors were off, and Pain stood there ready to take Naruto but both were completely unmoving?
"I'm dead?" asked Hinata.
"Certainly looks that way," said an old bald man with a droopy moustache sitting in a boat that hung in the air.
"Oh," said Hinata, slumping in place.
"Unless, of course, you wish to return," said the old man.
"Excuse me?" asked Hinata.
"You could return to life," said the old man. "I'm here to offer you that chance."
"What... do I need to do?" asked Hinata.
"Simply state what you desire, using the phrase 'I wish-' though you ought to consider it carefully as you will only get this one shot," said the old man, lighting a long pipe and taking a deep drag from it.
"A wish, like in the stories?" asked Hinata.
"Depends on which stories, which ones are you referring to?" asked the old man, blowing out smoke in the form of a long serpentine dragon.
"The... carp that granted a wish to the fisherman who freed it?" asked Hinata.
"Something along those lines, yes," said the old man. "Less along the lines of the monkey paw - though you DO need to be careful about how you word it. Such wishes will be granted in the simplest way possible, which may not be the manner that would benefit you the most."
"I- I see," stammered Hinata as she considered. Several minutes passed before she spoke again.
