Space, the final frontier. A brand new stage for the next portion of Rai and Alice's adventures with Celestial Being. But this particular adventure didn't get off to a good start for the Britannian pair.
Because they had not been properly prepared for the transition to space, the two of them had to turn in early for the evening due to symptoms of space sickness. The both of them had been given a nanomachine injection to help their bodies adjust to being in space before they went to bed. The next morning, Alice seemed to be more or less back to her regular self while Rai was still feeling a little woozy. He did insist on pulling his weight wherever he could which was why he was in the cockpit of the GRM Gundam in the morning getting a feel for things.
His assigned companion for the day was one of the mechanics, a young busty lady in a yellow coloured Celestial Being jacket, golden denim shorts and black boots who went by the name of Sherilyn Hyde. A part of him wondered what nationality she was since that he had not seen that combination of long blonde hair, green eyes and light coloured skin on anyone else before.
"Rai, are you listening?"
He blinked once in surprise before shaking his head. "Ah, sorry... you were saying?"
She fought the urge to sigh and merely went on with her lecture. "Because your unit will be fitted with a GN Tau Drive, you'll have to really mind the operating time. I recall that last night, we moved one of those special starter units on to the Ptolemaios. It'll be your responsibility to connect the GRM Gundam properly to that machine since not only does it recharge your Tau Drive, it's also a key part of the Tau Drive's activation process."
He nodded once. "Right."
"The special thing about your unit is your shoulder pieces, which house GN Condensers to store extra GN particles. So if you wanted to, you could extend your operating time but I suggest saving those particles to power up your GN Field."
"GN Field?"
"Basically, a barrier created by concentrating enough GN particles within a local area of space and shaping them into a form for full defensive coverage. As long as you have enough particles, the field can be wrapped around anything," explained Sherilyn.
Rai thought about this for a moment. "Sorta like a Blaze Luminous then..."
"A what?"
"A system that projects energy in the form of a shield around a nearby target. The amount of energy required to maintain the shields is proportional to the amount of energy being blocked by the shields. I remember... I mean, one of my alternate memories recalls using the Blaze Luminous in battle with the Lancelot Club. It was quite a nifty system."
She filed this information away for future analysis before continuing with her lecture. "Anyways, your Gundam also has an escape feature. The core fighter module can eject itself from the unit and form into a controllable escape pod. The thing is that this has to be activated manually so it won't be like those automatic cockpit ejection systems on those Knightmare Frames."
"I see."
"I cannot stress this enough, Rai. Make sure you really know when you need to use it." A pause. "Come to think of it, you can probably apply that same advice when it comes to Trans-Am."
Rai had a look of surprise. "This thing has it too?!"
"It's a psuedo version of it. Because this isn't a true GN Drive, it can't handle Trans-Am well and it'll cause heavy damage to itself, which will necessitate replacing the Tau Drive. Once the drive is damaged, you'll only have the particles in the GN Condensers powering you up so that means you better make sure you run while you can!" She looked at him for a moment. "Trans-Am is your absolute last trump card. Don't use it unless you're really in a bind."
He gave a shaky salute. "R-roger that."
"Have you went through the Trans-Am simulators? This way, it'll give you an idea of how to handle the extra power and outout from the drive."
"Not yet."
Sherilyn noted that down. "That'll be something you'll have to bring up with your fellow Meisters. Maybe you should talk about that with them when they put you through Zero G exercises later today."
Honestly, he wasn't sure if there was going to be a need to learn how to fight in zero gravity since the only presence in space is Celestial Being with Britannia being far from ready to head to the stars themselves since they poured their resources into expanding their military. Then again, one never knew when things could suddenly shift gears. "So what's next on the list?"
"Weapons review. We got standard GN Vulcans, GN Beam Sabers, a GN Shield and last but not least, your GN Mega Launcher which is only a double barrel."
"What do you mean 'only a double barrel'?" Geez, how much firepower could his mobile suit pack?!
"The GRM's GN Mega Launcher is a prototype version of the GN Mega Launcher used by the Gadessa. The Gadessa's version was a triple function rifle which could do a few more things that the double barrel version couldn't do." Then an idea came to her. "Maybe we should see how your unit would perform with that version of the GN Mega Launcher. The extra power couldn't hurt."
"Honestly, the double barrel rifle is overkill enough already considering that we're battling units that are only a fraction of the size of a Gundam," said Rai in a tired tone. "I don't mind doing the testing but I'll stick with the double barrel GN Mega Launcher unless we really get into a sticky situation."
This caused the female mechanic to laugh lightly. "Fair enough."
