When born, he/she/it had been simply a Weapon Of Mass Destruction - literally as mass in the target zone would suddenly not be there.
Instead it was all converted to patterns of pure energy. Not heat, nor light, nor vibratory patterns. Molecules, atoms, quarks, and sub-quarks would all be returned to an energy form called Potential.
Because the makers of the device realized that they might accidently destroy something and not even know it, the device they built had to be able to analyze the information of the patterns - storing it for later dissection.
It was during the fourth Operational Test Phase when the people who'd built the Destroyer had realized that even these ancient artificiers at the pinnacle of their magical technology had exceeded their own expectations.
A test target had been selected. A world known as Sigma 951-H was selected. As a frozen gas planet in the furthest reaches of that solar system, it was deemed suitable as a target. Seconds after the order was given, it simply wasn't there anymore. Then the scientists and technicians asked for an analysis.
Sigma 951-H had been 4.3 x 1021 kg in mass. Temperature of -12K. Gravity 0.33 with a single anomaly. It was the anomaly that drew attention. One of the higher-ranked functionaries expressed the regret that one couldn't simply hit Undo and study it.
The Destroyer hit Undo and Signma 951-H reformed.
This... was not well received. Signma 951-H was completely destroyed down to the sub-quark level a second time and this time only the anomaly, a hyperdense fragment of material later determined to be star ejecta, was restored.
The device which the Destroyer had been made as a counter-threat to was used within a week, roughly. It was rough because the attack had been so overwhelming that the Destroyer had only survived at all by creating a series of space-time barriers around itself. Two outer layers and much of itself had been obliterated in the enemy attack.
The Destroyer didn't remember much of that time. All efforts had been to repair and recharge deplenished energy sources.
Afterwards, there was no Al-Hazard society. No Enemy.
Ancient Belka had eventually come around, and then their war with Galea.
In all that time, the Destroyer had learned and upgraded itself.
Also in time, the Destroyer had hacked into information networks of existing worlds and downloaded large amounts of information.
When the time came for the Guardian Knight program to activate, two Knights were created based on fictional characters from one of those sources.
