Am I dead?
Something though. She could feel something. A hand, warm and comforting, holding onto her own.
It feels faint but familiar. Someone's been there for awhile. Who? Where are they?
Memories of pain and suffering, flashes in the darkness.
NO! I don't want to see! I don't want to remember!
The darkness seemed to lighten in one direction, Satsuki turned that way.
The smells were the first thing. Fresh linen. Disinfectant.
Sound came next. Wind rustling. Someone snoring?
Satsuki slowly cracked her eyes open. A hospital room. She was in a bed. Frowning, her eyes went over to see what she expected.
There was a blond boy in a chair next to her bed, holding her hand.
Satsuki winced as she got up just enough to pry the boy's hand off of her.
The door opened. A nurse came in.
"YOU! GET OUT! GET OUT! GET OUT!"
Satsuki frowned a little more as the sleeping boy was repeatedly swatted with a manilla folder half-rolled up and chased out of her room.
"Hey, that little monster was in here again! Someone wake up security," called the nurse out the door. "Damn demon... No visitors means no visitors."
Satsuki felt the darkness rising up again and struggled to keep her eyes open.
'Monster'? 'Demon'? He's annoying, loud, and dumb as a brick. Why call him...
Naruto ran as a nurse chased him off.
He felt guilty though, and felt he had to do SOMETHING. It was his fault that Satsuki's big brother had gotten away. It was his fault that a little girl had been stuck in a nightmare for as long as she had.
IF he had been able to stop Itachi, IF his surprise attack hadn't been so lame, IF he'd been able to keep up despite being a seven year old kid up against a fully grown teenager, IF -
There had been a pinch, and HE hadn't been sufficient. When that teenager had locked him in that genjutsu-whatever-you-called-it he had seen exactly how lame he was.
Naruto clenched his jaw. Well, he wouldn't be lame. He'd find a way! Never again!
"There's some problems with Satsuki Uchiha."
"What kind of problems?" asked the Hokage, who wasn't surprised. Going through a major genjutsu at that age was going to cause problems.
"For one thing, she insists that she doesn't want to be a ninja."
The Hokage stared. For an Uchiha to turn away from being a ninja was pretty much like a frog deciding to take up parasailing. It might be possible but it just came across as Wrong.
"She says that the ninja lifestyle promotes hatred and violence and needs to stop."
The Hokage opened his mouth and closed it. An Uchiha saying that, with their heritage, was just compounding the Wrongness of the concept. Even though, as someone who followed the Senju philosophy - he agreed with the basic principle. "So... she's quitting the Academy? What does she want to be, if not a ninja?"
"A housewife," said the medic.
"I see," said the Hokage. "Well, technically, there's nothing WRONG with choosing such a lifestyle - she's seven years old and that's likely to change as she gets older."
"So, when she wants to leave the Academy?" asked the medic.
"Tell her that it can't be done at this point in time, she'll have to wait till the end of the school year for voluntary withdrawal," said the Hokage. "It's a stalling tactic, but it should do for now. Any other concerns?"
"She seems to have blocked most of the events of the night out, which is expected after such shocks," said the medic. "Other than some odd new hobbies - nothing to report."
"What kind of hobbies?" asked Hiruzen Sarutobi, concerned for the young girl as she WAS pretty much the victim in all this.
