Mischief Fragment - Destroyer: Apprentice [Episode 250591]

by Kestral

Once upon a time, there was a student who dreamed of becoming a ninja who could eventually go on to become the leader of his people.

Also once upon a time, there was a little girl who met a talking ferret and became a magical girl who liked to "befriend" people. Sometimes in an extremely violent fashion.

And also in a certain time and place, heroes gathered.

"Midori Tanaka, Channel 5 Action News! We're here in downtown Uminari City where the battle between the kaiju, Dark Magical Girls, and various heroes has just ended.

"The Dark Magical Girls have fled, having targetted civilians in order to make their escape. Right now it's time for clean up, and... Sir? You appear to be in charge of something?"

"Yes, my name is Ichiro Watanabe. I'm with the Japanese Bureau Of Extranormal Affairs."

"I've never heard of that before."

"We try to keep a low profile. We're affiliated with similar organizations in the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union. We keep track of a number of factors and mainly stay out of their way unless we're actually needed. In this case, we're pulling strings and expediting paperwork in order to get this area rebuilt and allow the metahumans to work on clearing streets and performing search & rescue."

"You are?"

"Yes. We're also currently performing as go-betweens with the Japanese government and this 'TSAB' authority to smooth things out with minimal effect on the populace."

"So this is..."

"Yes. This is a First Contact situation. For all that we've had contact with various alien races previously, this is the first non-hostile non-Earth-based civilization willing to enter into formal relations with us."

"This is going to change the status quo," said one of the Diet members grumpily.

"No, it won't," said one of his colleagues. "Non-interference policy."

"Well, we'll still end up with the occasional alien enrolling in our schools and such."

The colleague just settled back into his chair and stared at the first speaker.

"What?" asked the Diet member.

"And this changes from how things were yesterday - how?"

"Oh shut up."

"Apprenticeships?" asked Nanoha.

"Yes, it's something that doesn't get a lot of press," admitted the government operative, clicking open the briefcase he'd laid upon the table of their living room. "Established procedure though. It was first done back in the thirties with the Justice Society Of America taking what they called 'sidekicks' and has developed over the years. Sometimes the relationship stays that way - sort of a 'master-apprentice' deal. Sometimes it's just a probationary period where the two go their own ways after the initial period. Sometimes in the latter case the new hero or alien refugee or probationary champion of justice retains the relationship with the more experienced member and their paths cross rather more often than would otherwise be usual. Batman and Robin for example. Even though there was at least one Robin who has gone on to become Nightwing, there's a new 'Robin' acting as apprentice to Batman."

"Ah, I see," said Nanoha's father. He felt a bit better about it if there was an experienced hand keeping an eye on his daughter after all.

"Fate?" asked the government operative, handing off a folder to the magical girl. "Your 'sempai' for these purposes."

"'Superman'?" asked Fate, taking the folder and flipping it open to examine the first page. "Is he a significant hero?"

"Quite," said Watanabe without any hint of sarcasm. "I think you'll find him adequate and somewhat of a 'champion of justice' type."

"Wow," said Nanoha. "That should be fun."

"One month period with all of these trials and assessments," said Watanabe. "Next you, Nanoha."

"Wonder Woman?" asked Nanoha, pausing for a moment. "I don't have to wear that outfit do I?"

"No, you'll wear your regular superhero costume," said Watanabe. "You're not Wonder Girl after all."

"What about that ninja boy?" asked Nanoha's father, having a certain degree of professional curiosity in that regard.

"Yes, actually," said Watanabe, figuring that with someone so loud as the orange clad one - the information would be in the news shortly anyway. "He's a stranger to our society and ways, and so will require a bit more instruction. He's with-"
