Mischief Fragment - Replay/Shinmei: Hinata, blade of the sunny field. [Episode 251076]

by Kestral

My name is Hinata. According to Kakashi-sensei, my name when I was alive was Hinata Hyuga.

Due to events I'm still unclear about, I am dead. Instead of being claimed by the shinigami or something similar, I apparently became a ghost who wandered the areas of Konohagakure for several years before Naruto found me and bound me to a wooden sword.

My memories of my time as a free ghost are hazy, whereas the time since I was bound to this sword are much clearer. I can see things much more clearly, and I can interact with the world to some extent. So I think being a magical sword is better than to be just a ghost.

I am still deciding whether or not I want to be a sword. While I am inhabiting this wooden sword, it can be broken or destroyed. I can still choose not to be a sword. That means that I might yet find my way to another life or afterlife. If I become a metal sword, it is much more difficult for me to give that up. I could become an heirloom weapon, handed down through generations of warriors to assist them.

It has its good points to consider, as well as bad points.

That's a decision for the future though. For now, I am a member of the team.

There is my wielder, as odd as that sounds, Naruto Uzumaki. The monster-hunter, demonslayer, exorcist, swordsman. Naruto Uzumaki, who has three chakras within him.

There is Sasuke Uchiha. Dark brooding avenger who doesn't speak much of his past, but whose past colors his every action.

There is John Smith, alias Kyon. He is a scholar of some kind from another world, a world without ninja.

We are led by Kakashi Hatake, team jonin-sensei. I know little of his past, save that he seems to get much respect from other ninja despite the books he frequently reads.

Together we are on a mission to Dokidoki Village in the northern section of Hi No Kuni. A monster was seen there some time ago, and we are to investigate and determine what it is and kill it if necessary.

"So what do we know about this village?" asked Naruto, breaking Hinata's train of thought as they ran and leapt from branch to branch when the trees were big enough.

"Dokidoki Village was originally settled by a few rice farmers whose original village was destroyed in the Second Great Ninja War. It's near the border with Iwa, with a large mountain that is frequently wreathed in fog. They said the beauty of the land there nearly caused their hearts to stop."

Sasuke made a gagging noise.

"Yes, well, that's what those who live there would tell you. Actually, from what I understand, it was founded by bandits who'd operated in Iwa until the heat got too great - then they fled with their spoils into our country. Bribes were paid, and they were allowed to settle there as long as they stopped the bandit lifestyle," said Kakashi. "I've been there twice, though both times I was just passing through on missions to elsewhere. The village is rice-farmers now, whatever their origin. Not wealthy, but not struggling too much either."

"So, reports of a monster?" asked Naruto after another mile had passed without Kakashi adding anything more.

"Oh yes," said Kakashi.

Another mile passed.

"AND?!" snapped Sasuke.

"Oh, I'm sure the villagers exaggerated," said Kakashi.

Sasuke brooded briefly as they went from treebranch-leaping to running along the fields.

"Like I've said before, you ninja are way too fond of secrets," said Naruto eventually. "Would it REALLY be too much to give us even a basic description of what we'll be facing?"

"Ah, well, it's probably not accurate," hedged Kakashi.
