The projectile streaked out, struck the large slime that was eating the flag marking the 13th hole, and fizzled out.
"Well, that was less than spectacular," pointed out Kakashi.
"It's eating plastic?" asked Hinata, her Byakugan going. "It's doing it though."
The slime bubbled and boiled as it finished its snack, and then formed a shape out of the resulting column.
"It's a slime girl?" asked Terra. "A human slime? Some jutsu maybe?"
"No, it's all slime, it's just reformed its body to more resemble a human," said Hinata after studying it.
"Well, it's smarter than the average slime," said Naruto. "Now that it has a face, it's a little harder to kill it."
"So we contain it," said Terra. "It's running!"
"At that speed?" asked Naruto, demonstrating that he could speed past it by a walk.
"Well, relative to its normal speed," said Terra.
"So," said Naruto much later at the Hokage's office. "Any idea who's doing this?"
"There are many suspects, but nailing it down is a bit difficult," said Kakashi.
"Actually," said a nearby chunin, looking up from his desk. "We think there's more than one."
"Really? What makes you think so?" asked Kakashi.
"One's more competent than the other," said the chunin. "One's apparently specifying combat summons, while the other isn't as picky."
"How did they even get my notes?" asked Naruto.
"We think one stole them, that's the less competent one, and the more competent one stole them from him," said the chunin. "Oh, and one's got really bad handwriting."
Sakura studied her preparations this time. She would get this fuuinjutsu done, and then Sasuke would see how valuable she was!
Hopefully there'd be no spiders this time.
Konohamaru went over the patterns he'd scrawled out, checking a book on fuuinjutsu, and then back to nudging the lines. His last experiment had worked! He'd actually summoned something! Okay, they'd been kinda jelly-like but at least the 'mostly harmless' and 'friendly' parts had also worked. Now if he could just get 'competent' added to the list.
"Okay," said Kakashi, showing up only fifteen minutes late, "today's mission."
Naruto held up a hand. "Summon control or parts making?"
"No, today you get a regular D-Rank while someone ELSE deals with a summoning malfunction," said Kakashi, smiling behind his mask.
"Why do I get the feeling that some other team is going to find themselves slimed," mused Naruto.
"Wouldn't bet against it," admitted Terra.
"...because they aren't as awesome as we are?" asked Hinata weakly.
"That's right," said Naruto nodding to Hinata with grin in place. "Now you're getting into the spirit of things."
Hinata began tapping her fingers together and looking pleased with herself for some reason.
"What... are these?" asked Sakura, not too sure of what she was seeing.
Shino drew back after a few moments. "What they are - are insectivores apparently."
"Well, then, Akamaru, it sounds like our turn to shine!" said Kiba. "Let's see how these things handle US."
"Arf!"
"You better not 'Dynamic Mark' me again," warned Sakura.
"Akamaru's aim's improved since then," said Kiba confidently.
