Everyone glanced to the wooden sword in Naruto's hands.
"She's hiding in a chest in that building over there to your right."
"The large one?" asked Kakashi.
"Yes."
"That's handy," said Kyon, glancing at the sword again.
"Good job, Hinata," said Naruto.
"Just a moment," said Kakashi, looking around. "There are no signs of forced entry. Most of the doors are closed. Some are left open and what I can see is that people left in a hurry but had enough time to pack."
"Which means?" asked Kyon. "They were scared enough to leave but didn't feel pressed for time?"
"Yes, pretty much," said Kakashi agreeably. "Whatever spooked them - oh hello, there's another clue."
Kyon looked in the direction that Kakashi was pointing. "What is that?"
"It's a weightstone," said Naruto unexpectedly. "They use those to set on top of large barrels to keep the lids tight on. The monastery uses them on top of fermenting vats."
"It looks like it came down on top of - well I'd say it was a wolf but it had two heads," noted Kakashi. "The back half of it is pretty much paste, but the front half is intact."
Kyon went up to the stone and grunted slightly as he lifted it off. "Uhn. Heavy."
"Yeah, well, they usually get three people to lift the thing," said Naruto. "Watch out, by the way."
"Huh?" asked Kyon just before the two-headed wolf tried to lunge and bite him. He was so startled that he dropped the stone. After a brief crunching noise, the wolf stopped moving again.
"Okay, that was creepy," said Naruto.
"'Creepy'? I'd say a bit more than creepy," muttered Kyon.
Sasuke stepped forward, did some hand-signs, and blew a fireball onto the remains.
"Why'd you do that?" asked Kyon as he took a few steps back.
"One of the legs was still twitching," answered Sasuke.
"You notice the way the ground is especially divoted here where it hit in the back?" asked Kakashi, pointing out the feature. "That means it was thrown."
"Rocks like that weigh about eight hundred pounds," noted Naruto, glancing at Kyon.
"Oh," said Kyon. It didn't feel that heavy. Man, if I ever get back - I'll never feel burdened by schoolbooks again.
The ninja filed into the house, all taking stations near the chest.
Kyon flipped the lid open with a foot, then jumped back as if he expected something to pop out.
"YAHHHH!"
A feminine yelp from within was the only immediate reaction.
"You can come out now," said Naruto as he realized the girl was cowering inside the chest. Which was NOT typical of ravening undead.
A head slowly peeked up out of the chest.
"A-Asahina-san?" asked Kyon as he recognized her.
"Y-y-you know me?" asked the girl.
"You know her?" asked Kakashi.
"Did Haruhi throw you into this universe too?" asked Kyon.
"Who?" asked Asahina, blinking in confusion.
North High School:
Everyone else looked towards Mikuru, Yuki Nagato pausing the playback.
Mikuru looked very embarassed.
"Let me guess," said Haruhi after a few minutes. "After you saw Yuki put herself into the series by posting on that website..."
"I'm sorry!" said Mikuru, bowing and looking very embarassed.
"Well, I'm upset!" declared Haruhi. "Why didn't they use mine?!"
Itsuki considered not saying anything, but really - SOMEONE needed to say it. "Because Queen Of The World wasn't an option with this plot?"
"I would have settled for Princess of Fire Country," indicated Haruhi.
There was a mass sigh that even Yuki took part of.
"Oh, fine. Just start playing again." Haruhi sniffed and looked miffed, though she was wondering if maybe she should just try again and this time go for 'Super Special Uber-Ninja Haruhi' instead.
"So, can you tell us what you're doing here?" asked Kakashi at the girl peeking out of the chest.
"Hiding?" asked Asahina.
"I think she's like Yuki," decided Kyon. "She's a copy of someone in my world, but native to this one."
"I-I'm a c-copy?" asked Mikuru, sounding dismayed about it.
"Did yours have all those stitches?" asked Hinata.
"Stitches?" asked Kyon, looking back at the girl.
"I take it back. Looking more closely, those 'stitches' are actually compressed seals."
"Fuuinjutsu?" asked Naruto. "Maybe Nagato-san can interpret them when we get back to Konoha."
"I-It's really not safe here," said Asahina. "S-she's coming."
"Who's coming?" asked Kakashi.
