When Kakashi Hatake used Shadow Clone, then Substitution, followed by Shunshin - Windy had whispered the results to Naruto.
Naruto had screamed and leapt because the jonin they'd been observing was now right behind them. Sasuke and Sakura reacted because of Naruto's reaction, and then realized WHY he had reacted.
Sasuke considered how fast, how silent, and how easily they'd been flanked. This cemented several things in his mind. Naruto wasn't useless. Their sensei knew some useful things. And Sakura had landed with a kunai drawn - which was promising.
Sakura wondered if her heart could beat any louder or faster without her suffering a heart attack at the tender age of twelve. She noticed that Sasuke had landed on his feet, kunai drawn, and that she'd somehow managed to draw one as well. Naruto was tangled in a bush. Well, he had some useful talents and maybe he could grow out of that clumsiness. He HAD managed to warn them that their sensei was behind them. Now if he could do that without screaming.
"Uhm, hi?" said Naruto, trying to disentangle himself.
"What do we have here? Foreign spies perhaps?" asked Kakashi.
"Knock it off, we know who you are, and you know who we are by now," stated Naruto. Which would have been a lot more effective if he hadn't been addressing a branch. "Dang. I would have to get into one that had thorns."
Sasuke made a noise that might have been an amused snort if it had come from anyone else.
"Oh?" asked Kakashi, deciding to test this. "Then who am I?"
"Kakashi Hatake, aka 'Sharingan Kakashi', alias 'Copycat' Hatake, among other names," said Sakura. "Former captain of ANBU. There's a pool among the female members of ANBU for a photo of you without your mask. 4000ryo."
Kakashi paused. "There is?"
"Among other things," said Sakura, referencing she'd read his bingo book entry at the Academy.
"Oh," said Kakashi, now thinking that some of the ANBU he'd met were trying to get dirty pictures of him. Well. That certainly WAS priceless intel.
"What's with the memorial anyway?" asked Sakura, thinking that this was going to be a major point their sensei was going to hit them with.
Kakashi saw no reason not to, so told them about the Memorial Stone and how every name on there was the name of a ninja who had died on a mission or as a result of trying to protect the village.
"So, did we pass the test?" asked Naruto, having now thought of unzipping his jacket and wiggling out of his restraint.
"Test?" asked Kakashi.
"Right, we figured out that the test was to find you," said Naruto as he began the task of freeing his jacket. "We figured out you were one of those sneaky types of sensei who's trying to get us to learn stuff by having us do the legwork."
"To be able to find out hidden truths is part of being a ninja," agreed Sakura.
"Ah. To be able to look underneath the underneath. Oh well, that part of the test," said Kakashi, perfectly willing to take shameless advantage of any misconception that made him look better. Besides, he could always dash their expectations later on.
"There's a second part of the test?" asked Sakura, catching that bit.
"Oh! I got it!" said Naruto. "You got to find US for the second part, right? And we only get to be on the team with an awesome sensei if we can manage to avoid being found, right?"
Kakashi paused. He was an 'awesome sensei'? How did THAT happen? When did that happen? "Uhm. Right..."
"Let's go!" exclaimed Naruto, running off and pulling his jacket on as he went.
Sakura and Sasuke exchanged a glance, nodded, and took off after Naruto.
Kakashi stared for a few moments, then facepalmed. He didn't do it very often but he felt this was a perfect situation for it. "That... wasn't my agreement to the terms. Oh well, I'll just find them. How hard can it be?"
