Tabitha, observing while mainly reading, certainly wasn't.
That the smoke column was ripped apart was a little more surprising.
"Get clear!" said the summoned familiar as it leapt out of the smoke. "It's coming!"
"What's coming?" asked one of the students.
Then IT was there between one eyeblink and the next, the smoke clearing as It moved forward.
"What the hells is that thing?!" screamed another student.
Tabitha fought the bile that attempted to escape at the sight of It.
Whatever It was, It wore the vague appearance of a human like some cheap clothing. Clearly It was trying to imitate humanity and was so far removed from her own species that the attempt was only vaguely close.
The face was featureless and the angles were wrong. The "clothes" It wore were obviously part of the thing. It was stretched too thin, too tall. The fingers were clawed tentacles. The joints looked to be in the wrong positions. There were tentacles from its back, black save for splashes of red blood that was clearly not Its own.
She was careful not too look to closely though, gathering details out of the corner of her eye. Several of her classmates were throwing up or curled up in a ball screaming, having stared for a second or two. The utter Wrongness of that thing was too great. She was experienced though in keeping tabs of things around here while reading her books, and this was a similar exercise.
Even the familiars surrounding the students had reacted much the same way as their Masters. Most were as far from the battle as they could manage. The least magical of the familiars were all trying to get madly away from It and the aura of Wrongness that surrounded It. The magical ones seemed to want to protect their Masters but also flee or cower from It. Of them all, Sylphied and herself were the most composed.
Then a torrent of flame smote whatever it was as Colbert overcame his own reaction and weighed into the battle. The thing that was It screamed despite having no mouth, and was distracted for a moment. Louise's familiar took advantage of the distraction with an attack despite being wounded.
Tabitha nodded, holding herself ready with her staff held high. She would throw ice at the creature when she had a clear shot.
