Looking around, he'd come to the conclusion that it had not been enough. Not to stand out.
"Hey, Ed. That's your Iron Man costume? Not one from the movies is it?"
"Oh, hi," said Ed, his facemask open so he could sip on a drink. "No this is from the comics. The NeuroMimetic Telepresence Unit, Model 155. Look at that Vegita."
"That has to be hot even in the air conditioning."
"Yeah," agreed Ed. "Catgirls. Steampunk. Steampunk catgirls. Starfleet."
"That Tardis over there is kind of nice. Wonder if I can get tips on that, wanted to build a garden shed like that."
"Oh," said Ed, eyeing the box walking across the auditorium floor before flipping his helmet closed again. "Wouldn't think it was that hard."
"The body, no. The various plates with the lettering would be a bit more difficult."
"Maybe," admitted Ed. "Translucent with backlighting. Might have to get that done professionally."
"Oh man. Someone came as the Slender Man?"
"Where?" Ed's face was concealed so you couldn't see his expression, but something in his voice indicated distaste. "Keeps bumping into people on those stilts, and the bloodstained tentacles are a bit much."
"Might as well put a sign up saying 'I'm Evil and Proud Of It'. How many tropes are visible in this room?"
"Over nine thousand I'm sure." Ed held up a hand. "Here comes Mister Winters. We'll see who in this crowd gets it."
"Yeah, my vote would be going to that one dragon. How they got all the parts to move like that, must be dang complicated."
"There was a Godzilla that was at least that articulated. Puppet making I guess." Ed paused. "There was a pair that came as Raven and Starfire from the Titans that really fit their costumes."
Mister Winters reached the podium.
Everything changed.
Including the one who would end up as the familiar of a Zero.
