Eleven year old Naruto swallowed nervously, then put a falsely cheerful face on. "Uhm, what does -"
"Pity," said the cat, shaking his head. "But perhaps its for the best."
The wheel vanished. The board vanished.
"No, we're not ready! Tell Sa-" Mikoto and the other two models vanished.
"Naruto, remember we lo-" his parents vanished.
"What?" asked Naruto.
Piece by piece, everything that had happened since he'd taken refuge in the warehouse evaporated.
"What? No..." said Naruto, head darting back and forth as he watched things disappear.
Hinata blinked and stashed the little device in her blouse, hoping nobody would notice her and that she still had Brisingamen.
"But..." said Naruto, looking around.
"Look kid, I'll give you a chance to think about it, okay? See you... in a year or so. Unless something draws my attention," said the cat. "So consider what your wishes will be then."
"Wait, 'draws attention'?" asked Naruto.
"Yeah, there's the whole time/space thing, sometimes I can get distracted and not come back until a century or so later," said the cat with a shrug before vanishing.
"But no... Mom? Dad?" Naruto looked around him, but now there was just him and - "Hinata?"
Hinata nodded, trying to think of something to say.
"Everything..." said Naruto. "Was it just a genjutsu?"
"No," said Hinata, tugging on a chain and pulling out a little device.
[Brisingamen. Ready.]
