Prior to that, there had been a bright and perky young elf - beloved of many and with great magical aptitude but not exactly a mathematical genius, who had tried to teleport herself out of her home and into a candy confectionary. She'd missed by only eighteen feet.
Since there had been a wall there, it had not ended at all well for young Usagitherudanil. That was also why so many elven buildings were lacking at least one wall. She had been VERY popular in her time.
The world had since been invaded a few times, and so now it was normal to have that teleport point guarded and in an area where it could be contained.
So, when a bubble of space/time burst, it was in a contained room that it could be sealed off if something unwanted appeared. For example, a horde of demonic beings from the Twisting Nether inclined to pillage and destroy and otherwise bring a very bad day with them to anyone not part of said horde.
However, the people in said contained area had to be able to deal with not only a horde of demonic invaders - but the far more common of event of a horde of magic students whose partying had gotten entirely too overboard and who mainly needed to sober up enough to be able to tell that no - this was not the local dorm.
The portal trainer, someone who could check identities and then authorize mages to use this portal (teleport safe destination) looked over at the two as they appeared and made a few discreet observations based on decades of experience doing just that.
The clothes were not a style she was immediately familiar with, though the elder of the two could be wearing the sort of thing a dwarven mage might. The younger was not related, in that she could tell, and had even less fashion-sense.
Humans, both of them. Not that this was unusual here in Stormwind. The elder was a huge bear of a man, the younger a stripling barely older than the Prince.
Neither looked to have been here before, the younger staring at everything and apparently not seeing much of anything. The older's eyes flickered about, showing some combat presence as he looked for potential hostiles.
"So, a child and a priest using a portal?" asked Larimaine Purdue.
Elsharin, a High Elf representitive within Stormwind, pursed her lips briefly before shaking her head. "No. The child has had some combat training, possibly a monk. The older, I'm thinking a mage but without a lot of formal training."
"Ah! What's up with those ears?!"
"Make that a rude little monk," appended Elsharin distastefully as she looked down her nose at the youth.
There was a smacking noise and a yelp.
"Naruto! Are you paying attention to anything I say? When you are in a strange land, do NOT go around insulting the locals."
"But look at those ears! They're huge and pointy and-"
"Do I have to smack you again?"
"They're freaking huge! How can you not-"
Elsharin looked over at the elder. "Do you mind?"
"Just don't kill him," said the elder of the two.
"Huh? What?" asked the child.
"Arcane Blast! Arcane Blast! Arcane Missiles!"
"WAGH!" said the wildly dodging child.
"Arcane Barrage! Frostfire Bolt! Ice Lance!"
Jiraiya held up a hand as Naruto went down with a chunk of ice bounced off his head. Then he nodded, scooped up the child and threw him over one shoulder. "Interesting. No physical damage done?"
"I used a dueling version," noted Elsharin. "He'll be fine in a few minutes."
"I was wanting to teach him one of those 'life lessons' here," said Jiraiya. "This'll do. Jiraiya of the Densetsu No Sannin, by the way."
"Ah, Elsharin," said Elsharin, inclining her head slightly. "You go through this portal and down the staircase. There are inns and taverns you can let the child recover at."
"Went a little overboard, didn't you?" asked Larimaine as the two vanished.
"I found that child incredibly annoying," admitted Elsharin. "So perhaps a bit."
"Wha- Where?" asked Naruto, startling awake.
"You went around randomly insulting non-human women for not being human," said a familiar voice.
Naruto focussed in on Jiraiya sitting in a large over-stuffed chair and spluttered briefly. "'Non-human'?"
"The girl with the ears?" asked Jiraiya, turning a page in a book. "You focussed in on that feature, but there were other details. Anyway. We're here and I'm scoping out the locale for training."
"Uhm, where are we then?" asked Naruto, remembering the scary ninja with the ears. Though some of the ninjutsu she'd thrown at him had looked VERY interesting.
Jiraiya held up the book briefly. "We are in a little crossroads town named Goldshire, in an inn that I've heard is heavily overpriced compared to places further out from the capital, called the 'Lion's Pride' despite not having onigiri or sake or something to take pride in."
"Weird names," mumbled Naruto.
"Which, if you said that to a native, might provoke further attempts to teach you to keep quiet while the adults are speaking," said Jiraiya. "This world is named Azeroth, and apparently it is in the midst of a war that runs in hot and cold cycles. Currently it is a 'cold' cycle with sporadic fighting in specified areas and they're expecting some major fight sometime in the near future."
"Hot and cold wars?" asked Naruto.
"You should know about that," said Jiraiya. "The Elemental Nations do the same thing. When we have a 'peace' cycle like what you grew up with - each of the nations is still carrying on little skirmishes and conflicts. Each of them trying to prepare for the next period where things heat up again."
"What were those jutsu that gal used on me? Hey, she used ICE."
Jiraiya nodded, looking up from his book. "I noticed. One reason we're sticking around. This is an opportunity for both of us to learn all sorts of new jutsu."
Judging from Naruto's expression, Jiraiya deemed that he had phrased that just about perfectly.
