"You're kidding," said Naruto. "I thought that kid was just scamming you."
"Nope," said Jiraiya. "It's right here between the 'Cauldron Of Desire' and the 'Eyebinder Staff' - did you really think the locals wouldn't have some indications or speculations on what the stuff did?"
"Well, if it's just speculations," said Naruto, grounding the spear and then leaning on it.
"The Demon-Beast Taming Spear, also known as the Demon-Beast Spear, the Juubi Staff, the Demonic Spear Of Excessive Destruction, and the Piercer Of Heaven and Earth," said Jiraiya, his finger tracking along the old parchment.
"All that?" asked Naruto. "Well, sure it's sort of a black spear and has this kinda glowy red aura flickering along it, but still..."
"Looks like it was designed to be used by a jinchuriki," said Jiraiya.
"WHAT?!" asked Naruto.
"Yup, an artifact of the time of the Sage Of Six Paths," said Jiraiya, not looking up from his reading. "It allows the tailed beast to experience life outside its prison by relaying directly what the spear itself experiences."
"Oh?" asked Naruto, staring at the thing. Was it staring back? If so, how was it doing so without any eyes?
"Allows you better control of the beast's chakra, can be used to fire off bursts of demonic chakra, a controlled partial transformation... but there's a downside." Jiraiya nodded as he tapped one section of writing with one finger.
"What, that the Kyubi can see and hear us?" asked Naruto, thinking that was downside enough.
"Maybe that the Kyubi can speak to you, Kit?"
"No, that part isn't even mentioned, and that it has a calming effect on you might offset that," said Jiraiya.
"Ah. That explains the mood swing."
Naruto nearly threw the spear into the campfire. That he was still debating the possibility was obvious to everyone else present.
"No, the downside is that when you rage, you lose control," said Jiraiya to Naruto. "Which means control training. We may have to swing by a monastery. Get you better at meditating and all that."
"If you're not going to do anything interesting, I'm going back to sleep."
"Go right ahead," grumbled Naruto.
