"I only know one technique to use with it, apparently I have to practice and learn others," said Jiraiya. "That one is - like so."
Jiraiya dipped the brush into one of the pots of ink he kept for fuuinjutsu purposes, then made a mark in midair.
That the ink formed symbols as if they had been written on a solid surface mildly impressed Naruto for the second before the effect went off.
It seemed as if the sun had just dawned, throwing brilliant rays of light out where the circle had been painted. The effect lasted for several minutes, causing Naruto to shield his eyes until the light faded.
"That was 'Sunrise' and the first Celestial Technique," said Jiraiya. "Well, now. I wonder what would happen if I..."
Jiraiya quickly drew a circle on the ground, then filled it in so that a circular blackness was there.
Naruto watched as Jiraiya flicked a line with a grapnel on the end down into the inkspot. There was a thunk after a brief pause.
"Hmmm, about five feet deep," mused Jiraiya as he reeled in the line and then waited. After a few minutes the ink shimmered and the hole disappeared. "Okay, that makes for an escape technique."
"I thought you said you knew only one technique," noted Naruto.
"I did," said Jiraiya. "You think you're the only one to experiment around with techniques and work out new ones on the fly?"
"When did I do that?" asked Naruto.
"Well, I assumed you did, it's a ninja thing," admitted Jiraiya. "Probably something involving shadow clones from the way you use them for everything."
"So what about this?" asked Naruto, hefting the spear.
"I'll drill you on some basic techniques, but for now, try holding it and creating a row of shadow clones. Go with twelve for now."
Naruto quickly did so, not sure where his sensei was going with this.
Jiraiya grinned. "Now that's what I'm talking about. Naruto, kneel down and position the spear like so."
Naruto did, a little bit more confused as Jiraiya directed him to put the non-pointy end of the spear against the ground with the pointy end held at an angle.
When his shadow clones got to the same position, Jiraiya beckoned Naruto to get up and take a look. "Now imagine a large number of enemies charging you."
"Ah!" said Naruto, seeing that basically there was a wall of stabby bits facing him.
"This is one of the most basic uses of the spear," said Jiraiya. "Now I'll show you three more, and I want you to practice them for an hour while I prepare dinner."
