Ninja Senshi Tobikage. Though that was hardly the only case of giant robots with a ninja motif. You could find at least one in an awful lot of series.
Also samurai. Look at all the ones that had swords of some kind in their giant metal hands.
So, giant robots piloted by ninja. A few of those. Which one to use though, with suitable localization?
Find the series, find the echo of that where the illusion is real, and then fit the pieces into place. Like so perhaps?
The waters sprayed everywhere, threatening to wash everyone off the bridge.
When Kakashi had recovered, he noted Zabuza gaping at what was over there. On looking himself (while creating a water clone of his own to cover Zabuza) he could certainly understand why.
It was a fox. Made entirely of various metals. Sufficiently huge that the bridge was a toy in front of it.
A tail moved, the nozzle at the far end coming around to point. There was a pulse of light.
Zabuza Momochi made a fatal mistake. He tried to block using his sword.
In less than an instant he was gone. His sword was gone. A large section of bridge was gone. The waters on the other side of the bridge were boiling and it looked as if... hadn't there been a small island over there?
Perhaps that was a bit too much. Though he didn't like spoiling his own surprises, Toltiir decided to look ahead a year and see what might go wrong with this scenario.
Except that there was no Naruto at that point. He'd been killed by Danzo Himura's orders when the boy had summoned his mecha during the invasion. At which point Danzo discovered that the mecha was linked to Naruto and disappeared when he died.
Apparently getting rid of the mecha was Plan B though, so Danzo was smugly satisfied about that part.
Well, THAT was certainly no fun.
How about something that altered depending on who he teamed up with, rather like that Tobikage thing or that Vandread construct he'd seen around somewhere. Maybe?
Naruto was briefly visible, glowing and slowly ascending into the air in a manner that was fairly atypical of genin.
The view of him was cut off when a metal shell formed around him, then a beam of light went out and snagged someone.
Kakashi being a jonin ninja and fairly experienced, he had started dodging the moment that he'd felt something like a summoning grab him.
That he reappeared in a fairly comfortable if oddly designed chair a moment later was just an indication of how much the ancient ninja Murufi was correct in his summation of ninja mission parameters.
"Naruto!" barked out Kakashi. "Without me to stop him, Zabuza will be killing Tazuna and Sakura!"
A green square appeared in front of him, and Kakashi could see that it was happening just as he'd feared. Zabuza was heading for the client and Sakura was clearly frightened out of her wits but getting in between the charging missing-nin and the client.
Until a large metal hand swatted down on top of Zabuza Momochi with a sound that proclaimed Doom.
The sword spun across the bridge, apparently having been knocked clear.
"Got it covered, Kakashi-sensei!" came Naruto's incredibly cheerful voice.
"What?" asked Kakashi.
"I can summon a giant robot, Kakashi-sensei!" said Naruto, now absolutely convinced that he was on the path of becoming an awesome ninja and Hokage! At any moment he expected princess-rescuing and saving nations and all the other cool stuff.
Kakashi looked around, noting that the field of vision from the Whatever was changing to mimic his movements. Almost as if he was a two hundred foot tall giant standing over the bridge.
Kakashi put that together a moment later and moved his hands into his field of vision. Metal hands, one of which had recently smooshed Zabuza Momochi, came into view.
Which reminded Kakashi of the missing-nin and he took a better look.
"Because you got in, it went with combat model, Kakashi-sensei. Huh. That's interesting. What's that mean?"
"What's what mean?" asked Kakashi, flicking through various screens as he experimented. He could focus the field of view close enough that he could make out the individual muscle twitches on Sakura right eyebrow. He could also read Sasuke's life signs, the life signs of the chunin level ninja collapsed in apparent grief nearby, and that Tazuna had peed himself.
Well, he WAS a civilian in the middle of a ninja fight who'd just seen a metal giant smoosh a ninja that had tried to kill him. Couldn't blame him that much.
That was more promising, right?
Combining with Sasuke provided a smaller but still combat-oriented mecha. Sakura provided a small hawk-like fighter that emphasized speed and mobility. Hinata and it was a reconnaisance/stealth model.
And then a year later he was locked in a genjutsu and forced to combine with various Kumo-nin after he'd been kidnapped.
Well, crap.
He was obviously missing something.
Maybe he should try:
