Tenten had found the odd tattoo on her back just below the neck and had sent chakra into it. Hinata had watched as the odd "tribal" symbol seemed to change to green crystal for a moment. Then Tenten's physical form had been gone, but the Byakugan had revealed that the bo-staff had a chakra network and could see the faint ghost of Tenten floating in mid-air behind Naruto.
She'd been completely exhausted after using her special ability in the bo-staff/three-section-staff form of "Shockwave" - sending a wide area Lightning-nature chakra burst from the point of impact.
When Hinata's turn had come up, her main concern had been that someone using the Byakugan would see a faint naked Hinata there behind Naruto. Not that any details had been visible to her - there wasn't enough definition on the "ghost" for that. But it would still be extremely embarassing.
Now she found another concern.
Fans? I turn into fans?
"Looks like it," noted Naruto, opening and closing the two fans he was holding - one in each hand. Strips of metal reinforced wood, with thin metal folding along tiny hinges as the fans were opened and closed. Sensu-style fans. Fragile in some ways, fairly tough otherwise.
THIS IS SO UNFAIR!
"Uhm," managed a startled Naruto as the wave of frustration and anger washed over him.
I could have turned into a naginata or a sword or something! I end up turning into a pair of ornamental fans!
Naruto tried to think of what he was supposed to say or do, but was coming up with a blank.
I'm so useless. Even when I get the ability to transform into a weapon - it is a useless weapon. I'm so pathetic.
Having the thin anger suddenly break and go into full depression and self-loathing further put Naruto off balance. "Uhm."
Why couldn't I have been something useful to Naruto-kun?!
"Well, I wouldn't say 'useless'," said Naruto. "I mean these might cut someone up and the metal seems okay."
"Who are you talking to?" asked Iruka.
"Hinata," said Naruto.
This is...
"You're able to talk to them while they're weapons then, that's good," said Iruka.
You can hear me?
"Yeah, I can hear you Hinata," said Naruto. "You're not pathetic or useless. I don't know how to fight with these though."
Oh.
"Tenten had a special attack, does Hinata have one?" asked Iruka.
Oh dear.
"Yeah," said Tenten, standing up as she recovered from her exhaustion. "That was interesting. Have to try and schedule some time to practice that."
You heard everything?!
"Uhm, I think so," said Naruto.
AGK!
"It'll be tricky with me being on a team already," said Tenten. "It's a new definition of teamwork - that's for sure."
You mean you can hear me THINK?! That you know I like you?! That your smile is like the sun breaking through the clouds of a gloomy day?!
"Hang on," Naruto said to Tenten. "Hinata's talking and sounds like some kinda poetry or something. And I like you too, Hinata."
There was a shimmer in the air and the two fans vanished from Naruto's hands. Instead there was a soft thump as Hinata hit the ground completely limp.
"That was weird," said Naruto.
"Maybe she ran out of chakra?" suggested Tenten, not sure of what was going on here.
"That must be it," agreed Naruto. It was an explanation, therefore he'd take it.
