"Yeah," said Naruto, making a "bring it on" pose while flanked by Riolu and Vulpix.
"Ready," said Sakura, checking and finding that Pidgey was aloft and circling the area.
"Hnnn," hnnned Sasuke, eyes narrowed as he watched this jonin for any clue as to the test.
"Fine, you pass," said Kakashi with a sigh.
There was a moment of silence, followed by the three genin looking at each other.
"Uhm, what?" finally asked Sakura.
"I approached the Hokage about details," said Kakashi.
Flashback:
"So his teleport jutsu lets him go anywhere one of these tags are, and one of them is in this 'pokemon' world?" asked Kakashi.
"Yes," said the Hokage. "I've also taken the initiative and sent these T3s out-"
"'T3'?" asked Kakashi.
"Teleport Target Tags," said Hiruzen Sarutobi. He shrugged slightly. "Until a better name suggests itself. The target mark itself is fairly simple and easily copied, requiring only a beginning understanding of fuuinjutsu. I've sent them out to various locations to be hidden away so that in various events they can be used. There's a false rock near the border with River Country concealing one, for example."
"What if I fail them and send them back to the Academy?" said Kakashi, as that WAS the plan.
"Then I assign you their 'capture the pokemon' D-Rank missions, have Naruto pulled from the Academy by the end of the day, and assigned as a specialist with T&I. Maybe the whole team under Anko Mitarashi as their sensei."
Kakashi was a pervert. Even so, he shuddered at the thought of what horrors that particular kunoichi would put them through.
Anko Mitarashi paused as she poured a cup of tea, the moment serenity of her tea ceremony disturbed by something she couldn't immediately place.
After a moment, she merely continued - just ready to do something violent if she figured out who had done what.
Present:
He'd decided to have a bit of revenge by emphasizing some parts of it and leaving others out. His test had been screwed with, so it was only fair right?
"I found out that instead of just going back to the Academy for the remedial courses, there was a chance of you ending up under Tokubetsu Jonin Anko Mitarashi." Kakashi didn't need to fake a shudder, all he had to do was focus on some of the rumors and stories he'd been told. "Killing all three of you would have been a mercy to... THAT."
Sasuke looked skeptical, Naruto looked confused, Sakura looked like she wasn't sure what was going on.
"You should know that in our lifestyle as ninja, most of the higher level ninja have... issues," said Kakashi.
"'Issues'?" asked Naruto.
"You're talking about the psychological stress of high level ninja duties and the long-term effects relating to being constantly ready for attack and instant death. Right?" asked Sakura.
"You're already familiar with that?" asked Kakashi.
"There was an article on similar effects in the office of a pokecenter I was in," said Sakura.
"Yes, well, with Anko Mitarashi - it goes a bit further than that," said Kakashi, who then began to relate some of the stories he'd overheard. Most of which had at least a kernel of truth, but honestly most of them were jokes among the ANBU and T&I staff. Things along the order of Anko Mitarashi doesn't just torture someone, after she's done the victims practically beg for someone to just use the hot branding irons just to get them AWAY from Anko.
Psychological torture, bloodlust, the use of insects and poisons, drugs to allow one to "properly appreciate pain", even that one story about a missing-nin from Kirigakure who put even Itachi's massacre to shame - and how he was broken and sobbing for the sweet release of death after he'd been in Anko's care for a single day.
At the end of which, Kakashi felt a bit vindicated. Also a tiny bit of shame because these WERE impressionable young genin.
Just the pale faces, cold sweat, shivering - all indications he had managed the effect he wanted.
"So anyway, show up here tomorrow at oh-six-hundred," said Kakashi. "We'll see what kind of D-Rank missions you'll end up with."
