WHAT?!
Things blurred as they moved in reverse.
"-and Team Seven shall be Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Uchiha, and Sasuke Haruno."
"Oh, that's better," said Naruto. He paused. His head whipped up to the ceiling. "STILL NOT RIGHT!"
Again things briefly blurred into reverse.
"-and Team Seven shall be Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, and Sasuke Uchiha," said Iruka.
"That's better," grumbled Naruto, stretching one leg out and feeling it bump into something. When he looked down at it, he noticed it was a little floating cube with a "Str" on it.
"What the-?" asked Naruto before noticing he was getting some odd looks. Deciding to ignore those, he hooked a foot under it and moved it closer. Once his hand touched it though, it disappeared in a flash of light.
"There are power ups? Like secret bonuses?" asked Naruto to himself.
"Oh," said Naruto softly.
Sakura glanced at Naruto as he took a stance at the front of the classroom. "You better not go anywhere, Naruto!"
"You don't want me to leave you alone with Sasuke?" asked Naruto.
"Our new sensei is supposed to..." Sakura stopped and got a very thoughtful expression. "Err."
Pa-domf! appeared fifty copies of Naruto.
"Fall in line! Fall in line!" said Naruto to his clones as they assembled into formation. "Squads A, B, C, D - that'll be you in groups of ten. Your mission is to go looking around for powerups. Squad E - practice chakra control in... why is there a girl version of me?"
"I was about to ask that myself," said Sakura, staring at the girl Naruto.
"As I understand it," said girl-Naruto. "There is a chance whenever you create more than ten kage bunshin that one of them will be a decidedly different variant. Such as myself, Girl Genius Naruto."
"Great, more videogame stuff I guess," grumbled Naruto. "Okay, you dismiss yourself."
"Are you sure? I could go get lunch or some books so you have something to do while you're waiting," said girl-Naruto.
"Huh, that ain't a bad idea," said Naruto. "Either of you want any ramen?"
"No way!" declared Sakura. "I'm on a diet."
"Pfeh," said Sasuke.
"Too bad there's no character editor," grumbled Naruto.
"What was that?" asked Sakura, tired of Naruto mumbling weird stuff.
"Noth-" PING! [Int +1] "-ing... oh. Wow."

Something is up with Naruto.
Great. My 'inner voice' is paranoid. About NARUTO.
Like he's a good three inches taller, about ten pounds heavier, and is reading a book titled 'So You Want To Warp Space/Time? A primer on Fuuinjutsu' like now?
Sakura straightened just a bit, frowned and turned her gaze away from Sasuke to get a better glimpse of Naruto. What the hell? When did he go from 'wimp' to THAT?
Memories flashed through his head as a large number of clones were abruptly terminated.
So, I know where two 'trap' are. I know that if I trigger a Powerup, it isn't until that clone dispels that I get the benefit. There's a 'dungeon' under the Uchiha district that requires four people to go in - and clones don't count.
There's this book - which has some neat stuff in it. Origami animals? Deeper Pockets? Seals that repel stuff like water. Other seals which contain things and even some that cause things to be sealed up in a scroll.
There's those goggles, have to try them out tonight. Too bad I couldn't find a kickass sword.
Naruto rooted around in a desk, found some materials, and began scribing out a fuuinjutsu.
Once done, he put one sheet up on the ceiling and another on the door itself.
"You're gonna get in trouble," said Sakura. "He's a jonin. No way he's gonna fall for that!"
"I don't know this 'Kakashi' guy, do you?" asked Naruto, checking directions and reorienting the paper slightly.
"Well, no," admitted Sakura.
"Then how do you know he's not testing us or something?" said Naruto. "He's a jonin. So he makes enough money he can get a watch. He's also a sensei. So he has to know what we can do. This showing up late might be just so we have a chance to show off our stuff."
"That's stupid," declared Sakura. "We've already passed the exams. There's no reason to test us at this point. Honestly, Naruto, you're so immature."
"What's it do?" asked Sasuke unexpectedly.
Sakura suddenly looked very unsure of herself.
"That waterbucket in the corner?" asked Naruto with a grin, pointing at the seal on the ceiling just inside the door.
"Bucket's still there," noted Sasuke.
"Yeah, but the water isn't," said Naruto. If I'd known you could use this stuff for pranks, I'd have been working this stuff for YEARS!
"The one on the door?" asked Sasuke, peering at the design. "Is that... raiton?"
"Yeah, not a strong one," said Naruto.
Sasuke nodded and settled back into his chair and resumed his brooding posture.
So. A mask. It isn't possible for a incompetent person to act the part of a competent one, so it must be that he's always been competent and acted the part of a fool.
Sasuke kept his gaze focussed on the wall, in his usual brooding position. In fact, he was quite aware of his surroundings. He chose to ignore Sakura, who was doing her usual 'gaze longingly and occasionally sigh' act. Hopefully that too would be revealed as a mask and there was someone competent under that facade. He wasn't going to hold his breath, but he honestly hadn't expected Naruto to reveal areas of actual competence.
The bucket was briefly moved so that's when he did that. Also those weren't the usual clones. Those were solid - as they moved out the air was disturbed in their passage.
Fuuinjutsu. Tricky. More an art than a science. Requires planning to set things up, but can be devastating when such things can be prepared before they are needed. Most ninja just buy sealing scrolls or blast tags, those who make their own can alter the results to provide special benefits. Not something that the Uchiha clan ever specialized in, direct combat being more our style.
This might be an interesting team after all.
The door slid open. Someone stepped inside.
A bucket's worth of water splashed down on the spiky silver hair and a small electrical current was applied.
Which he automatically grounded out because his chakra was normally aligned with Lightning element.
"I can't believe he fell for that!" declared Naruto.
"My first opinion of you - I don't like you guys," said Kakashi.
"It was all Naruto's fault - he did it!" declared Sakura, eager to deflect blame from herself and Sasuke.
"Not my fault he didn't decide to demonstrate some crazy jonin-level trap avoidance jutsu," grumbled Naruto.
"Huh," said Kakashi, examining the two sheets of paper. "Fuuinjutsu?"
"Yeah," admitted Naruto.
"A storage seal for water, with a proximity trigger?" asked Kakashi, pointing at the ceiling.
"Yeah," admitted Naruto.
"Raiton release, storing static electricity and then discharging when the other seal was triggered?" asked Kakashi.
"Yeah," repeated Naruto. "I linked 'em. Too obvious?"
"Actually, that's not bad, for a wet-behind-the-ears genin who just graduated the Academy," admitted Kakashi. "Should have used a purity seal on the water though. What's the apple-scent?"
"Oh, those buckets are kept sitting for awhile, to demonstrate water techniques or put out fires," said Naruto. "Iruka-sensei adds a little bit of some kinda apple-scented vinegar to keep stuff from growing in there."
"Is that what that is?" asked Sakura. "I mean - I knew it all the time. Right, Sasuke?"
"Hnn," hnned Sasuke.
[Sasuke: Stop bothering me.]
Naruto blinked at the subtitles, thinking this could be REALLY handy.
"Anyway," said Kakashi, either blind to the byplay or ignoring it. "Meet me on the roof and we'll get this part over with."
"So," said Kakashi Hatake. "My name is Kakashi Hatake. My likes and dreams are entirely too adult for you. My dislikes are many. You next, blondie."
"I-," began Naruto, whose mouth closed with a click as the scene paused and he got another block of text hanging before him.
