"What?" asked Tenten. "Why?"
"It is nothing he's done," said Gai. "It is instead something involving a reshuffle of existing teams. We are getting a genin fresh from the Academy whose fires of youth have developed an interesting twist. He also needs taijutsu training, and I am considered the Leaf's foremost specialist."
"Yosh! We will fan the flames of the new genin's taijutsu to new heights!"
"Yeah," said Tenten. "So we're going to be held back by some new kid. I was hoping we'd get some C-Ranks in soon. And my fortune this morning said 'new developments would benefit me' but still..."
"Actually, Tenten, I think this might interest you considering your studies into weapons," said Gai. "The new genin is Naruto Uzumaki, and he has something out of that book you were reading the other day."
Tenten looked skeptical. "He has something out of 'Metallurgy Secrets Of The Kiri Swordsmiths'?"
"No, not that one," said Gai, pausing to think. "What was the book with the red cover?"
"It was orange. It was 'Icha Icha Violence' and you still owe me for that after you burned it."
"A most unyouthful book," said Lee.
"Ah yes, my mistake," admitted Gai. "The green one?"
"He's a trap expert?" asked Tenten. "That one was 'Herbcraft, Poisons, and Spring Blades' by Koharu Uehana."
"The history book," said Gai.
"Oh. 'Legends of the Six-Path Sage' - that was months ago," said Tenten. "I know that it was written by a historian out of Cloud, but I'm not too sure how accurate that was. I think there were about five copies sold before the whole thing was declared a C-Rank secret and the publisher had to recall the copies."
"This is a village secret, but you need to know this in order to both train him in its use and to adapt your tactics to his ability," said Gai. "He has Breaker."
Tenten blinked. "That's a good one, Gai-sensei. You almost had me going there."
"What is 'Bure-ka'?" asked Rock Lee.
"According to the book, the Sage had six great tools - each dealing with an aspect of the ninja arts," said Tenten. "A sealing pot, a fan of Element Release, a staff that shielded, a bracer and chain that negated chakra use, a brush that could paint genjutsu, and so on. They're myths though."
"Perhaps not so much," said Gai. "With evidence of one such, there may be missions to investigate others. For now though, there will be at least five D-Rank missions to bring him up to speed before we take any C-Rank missions."
