Of course, by that time all three genin were well past the tree and didn't really NEED any incentive to run faster.
Sasuke had a kunai out, slashing through another section of webbing, and past that obstacle with only a minor break in stride.
"Bad day, bad day, VERY bad day," said Naruto, summing it up as he passed Sasuke. He made a hand-seal and there were now a dozen Naruto all breaking off and running in different directions.
Sakura would have said something positive about Naruto using his head and providing a distraction to draw off at least SOME of their pursuers. Unfortunately she needed all her breath to avoid becoming spider-food.
Over another fallen tree, and around a couple of others, and then there was a literal WALL of white webbing in front of them.
Naruto drew a kunai himself, determined to not let Sasuke hog all the glory. Never mind that slashing through spider web wasn't exactly something of glory.
Sasuke and Naruto both slashed at different sections, leaping through the webs as there was a sudden loud hiss from what sounded like WAY too many mandibles. Sakura, of course, followed on Sasuke's heels.
"A cliff?" asked Sasuke as he found himself out over open water. Unfortunately, it was open water a good sixty feet below.
"A cliff," agreed Naruto as they continued to drop.
"AGHHH! THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT, NARUTO!" declared Sakura.
One of the spiders went out to the cliff, then began picking its way down that cliff to get to where the morsels were likely to wash up.
It realized its mistake a moment later as the Cliffdweller grabbed it in wide talons. Naturally, it struggled. Up until its head was bitten off.
The remainder of the spiders simply stayed in their woods, away from the bright light and dangers of being out in the open.
"Okay," said Naruto, having crawled onto the rocky shore and looking in the direction of the grassy fields. "This isn't worse than the spiders."
"Hnn," agreed Sasuke.
"Maybe we can swim away?" asked Sakura.
