"I am Doctor Madeline Madison. Some call me Mad Doctor. You, Kakashi Hatake, may call me Mad. Your reputation proceeds you."
"I see," said Kakashi, not sure what reputation she was talking about. "My genin?"
"Experimental Subject 404. She filled out the proper forms after all. We will, of course, be turning her over to you for monitoring and will require that between missions she come in on a monthly basis for monitoring," said Mad. "Come with me, if you will. This will be easier to explain with appropriate visual references."
The short woman led them through a couple of corridors, down a stairs, past a large steel door, and through a corridor where partitions opened before them and closed after them.
"Here we are," said Mad as she entered a room. "Come come. No dawdling. Time is as precious a commodity as anything else. Here we go. Ah. Let me get to the appropriate files."
After rummaging around in a box full of paper, she retrieved a large folder and set it on the desk. From it, she removed a set of photos and spread them across the desk.
"These are the photos of the original equipment and experimental subjects that Orochimaru left behind in one of his laboratories hidden in the sewer system. Completely unacceptable conditions. It's a wonder more of his experimental subjects didn't die from septic shock."
The various pictures were gruesome, half-human and half-animal and twisted around in grotesque manners.
"Orochimaru was apparently trying to find a way to create ninja minions who were bloodthirsty in a literal sense, and more powerful than the typical chunin," explained Mad. "He failed and turned his attention to other methods."
"How many?" asked Naruto.
"Orochimaru's subjects that we recovered - thirty subjects - all deceased." Madeline shook her head. "Of our own experiments - fifteen subjects. No fatalities."
"That's quite a difference," said Kakashi.
"Different approaches naturally," said Madeline. "So far, only six have had poor reactions to the modifications and we were able to stabilize their genetic pattern. No super-ninja but we started low and worked up. Orochimaru started high and began working down before he gave up."
"What about Haruno-san?" asked Naruto.
"Ah," said Madeline, standing to her full height and raising a triumphant fist. "A success. One of two so far. She only has minor changes but is completely stable. At least in all tests performed so far. Still unconscious, but it has only been a few hours since the sedatives were discontinued."
"So what modifications were done?" asked Sasuke, curious. This was a path to power after all, something he DID understand.
"There's a spiritual component," noted Naruto as he went over the photos and looked at the equipment in the background of the photos now being spread alongside the previous ones.
"Yes," said Madeline, looking pleased. "Something Orochimaru apparently didn't put much stock in. We have expanded upon that section due to the religious stance of one of the scientists involved and apparently it DOES have some beneficial effects."
Several of the photos showed pictures of Sakura with what looked like towels covering certain areas that were not appropriate for general audiences.
"Those are real?" asked Kakashi, not even looking at his book.
"Oh yes, quite real and functional," said Madeline proudly. "The animal we used was:"
