"This is NOT the Hyuga," noted Ay.
"This is the jinchuriki of the Nine Tailed Fox," said the ninja. "The Hyuga girl was unavailable. Whereas this child was easily taken."
"How did you find out that this is a jinchuriki?" asked Ay, thinking the whisker marks were unusual but that didn't necessarily mean anything of the sort.
The ninja snorted. "Their entire village apparently knows. I overheard two civilians talking about the demon child, and one made a reference to the fox."
"Hmph. My head ninja?" asked Ay.
"Dead. He went after the primary target but was caught before he could cross the perimeter. He instead decided to lag behind and delay pursuit."
Ay nodded. "Get Yugito. She'll be able to tell if the boy is really a jinchuriki. If he is, we'll raise him as a loyal Kumo ninja. If not, we'll find some use for the brat. What's his name?"
"Naruto Uzumaki," answered the ninja.
Naruto Uzumaki tied his headband in place, checked his reflection one last time, then headed out for the Academy. He was assigned a team today, and his path would be clear before him.
Would it be a Heavy Assault team? He could do that! Would it be a team of swordsmen or weapons specialists? He could do that too, more or less. Maybe he'd be put on a team with Bee-sama or Yugito-neechan!
The path to awesomeness was before him!
When he got there, it was just the usual crowd. Some were playing cards, Megumi had her yakitori stall set up (in spite of Academy regulations), Neo was looking all dark and broody, and the only thing that looked out of the ordinary was the fresh paper put up on the bulletin boards.
"003175" mumbled Naruto as he went to his number and then traced his finger over to the next column. "7?" Naruto wasn't sure if that was a lucky number in his case. If it had been "2" or "9" or "8" he would have thought it lucky. Maybe it would still be lucky though.
There was "K" and "Y" over there. The pair of chunin known as the Unlucky Duo or (if they were safely out of hearing) the Dirty Pair of Kumogakure. Every mission they were assigned was completed - but things had a tendency to escalate. NOBODY wanted to be assigned to either of them. Their past seven missions had been with a team of genin, and they'd been the only survivors for four of those missions. Even though there had been two jonin on one mission.
Oh, over there was "J" - nobody was sure what to make of him. Old guy, jonin. Kept to himself mainly. Craggy old guy, semi-retired. He might make a good jonin-sensei though.
"Yo. Naruto!" yelled one of the others. "What team?"
"Seven," responded Naruto. "You?"
"Two!" responded Kazuki.
"Two!" called out Yuzuki, Kazuki's twin sister. Though they weren't identical twins. They DID have a tendency to end up together. Which seemed to please Yuzuki and mildly puzzle Kazuki for some reason.
"Two?" asked one of the quieter girls from the class. "I'm in two."
"Mario and Luigi are in six," announced Mario. "Yay yay!"
"I wonder what the test will be," asked Kazuki.
"Test?" asked Naruto. "What test?"
"There's always a team test," said Kazuki with a shrug. "No idea what though. Can't get anyone to give details."
"So a hidden test after we graduated? Sneaky," summed up Naruto. "Oh well. Have to cross that chasm when we get to it."
"Bridge, Naruto." Kazuki shook his head. "You picked that up from Yugito-sempai, didn't you? She's always getting phrases wrong."
"Mah. Maybe," admitted Naruto, rubbing the back of his head. "So who's on 7?"
