"You think they're bluffing?" Akane asked hopefully.
"No. I think they're dead serious. Emphasis on dead," Nabiki held up a book of Amazon Law she'd managed to "borrow". "At this point they consider you married to Shampoo and Ranma and it is only your own customs and waiting for your ceremony that keeps Shampoo from grabbing you and going to visit Ranma at night. According to Amazon Law, the way for you to file a divorce is called 'The Ceremony Of Broken Flesh'."
Akane crossed her fingers. "That's just a name to scare off outsiders, right?"
"Bzzzt. Wrong!" Nabiki corrected. "You challenge Shampoo to a fight. Any weapon which does not leave the hand is valid. The best thing you can do to her is kill her - that indicates you still respect her as a warrior and a potential threat, but that she was insufficient as a woman to satisfy you."
Akane colored. "And if I leave her alive?"
"If you permanently cripple her," said Nabiki, opening the book and going to a chapter. "Ah. You are stating that she is not even worthy to be killed by you. She has to kill you and then herself to deal with the loss of honor. If you defeat her but she's just knocked out or something, you insult her, her status as a Warrior, her status as an Amazon, her family, her tribe, and the entire Amazon nation. Her family has the right, the way this reads it's darn near unavoidable, for a blood feud in which all members of the insulting family will either be enslaved for a period of five years or killed outright."
Akane twitched.
"Five years, huh?" Nabiki shrugged. She could handle five years.
"Isn't there some other alternative?" asked Akane.
