It was clumsy-looking and without the elegance that more modern Intelligent Devices had. Edna Mode thought the four devices were considerably less advanced than the typical ones the Time-Space Administration Bureau and somewhat tacky-looking.
Toltiir had designed them that way for the specific purpose he had in mind.
Bahamut was the first and set the pattern for the Devices that came after. All named after Final Fantasy summons.
[Bahamut activated.]
The bracer settled into place on his arm, parts shifting around to make it a snug but not tight fit.
Edna Mode tapped away at her computer, looking at three different holographic screens. "Fascinating darling. If this was two hundred years ago this would be state-of-the-art. Try putting it into Device Mode."
"How?" asked Naruto.
"The usual command is the name of the device and 'Set Up'," said Edna absently. "Interesting. Some of the subroutines look slapped together."
"Bahamut Device Mode," tried Naruto.
[Compliance.]
With a roar, the device expanded to cover his right hand and a similar gauntlet began clanking into place on his left. Boots were apparently included and those began forming as well.
"Very clunky darling, don't you agree?" asked Edna as she flicked from one screen to another. "So many improvements I could make."
"Uh I suppose," said Naruto.
Lighting changed to red and an alarm began sounding.
"Oh bother, what is it now?" asked Edna. "Always something. Alarm this and alarm that and go running hither and yon. So many demands on my time!"
Edna cleared her screens of data to pull up one with the word "Escape" and a picture. "Oh," was Edna's simple comment.
Of course, when she checked again - Naruto and the four devices were missing.
"This was a bad idea."
"I didn't see you offering better solutions, dattebayo!"
"Shut up, Naruto, he's right. We were in holding cells but we would have gotten out eventually."
"Except Sasuke attacked one of the guards when he tried to escape."
Sasuke scowled. That had turned out to be not so good an idea but how was he to know they were being watched and that there were these weird fuuinjutsu capture devices?
"Well, Sasuke was just determined not to reveal any village secrets."
"Sakura? Give it a rest."
The pilot stuck his head in the door. "We should be arriving in five minutes. You guys will be ready?"
"Absolutely!" declared Naruto.
"Good. Anyone that could take Nanoha Takamichi down enough for a distress signal to be cut off - they've got to be fairly formidable."
"A strong opponent?" asked Sasuke.
"That's the spirit," said the pilot encouragingly before disappearing back to the control booth.
"So," whispered Sakura. "What do we do?"
Sasuke looked over the remaining three Devices before choosing one. "Arm ourselves, look like we know what we're doing, and escape when opportunity arrives."
