Lee had made a startled noise at the three younger genin becoming larger dragons, and again when a floating island was suddenly visible as they landed on it.
Gai, though it would have surprised a number of people present, was silent through most of the proceedings. At several points he would glance at the Hokage, who would likewise silently nod, then return to being silent about the whole thing.
The Hokage at one point went to the large crystal, found the relevant section, and then indicated Lee. "One has come forward to become a dragon of the Leaf Village. This is your last chance to change your mind. This transformation will change you permanently into a dragon of the same species as these three, using a mechanism here to widen the genepool of the new race. Do you wish to continue?"
"Yosh!" declared Lee. "I will accept whatever trial is before me!"
A circle of blue light appeared around Lee, prompting a startled noise from him.
The Hokage turned and read more of the section. "One has come forward. Who will sponsor?"
Sasuke was silent for a moment before he spoke, his voice as a dragon being a bit lower and louder but otherwise the same. "I shall sponsor."
A circle of light surrounded Sasuke, then a line shot from his circle to Lee's circle. The lighting changed, shifting from blue to red.
"Okay, that means something," mused Naruto.
Odd script appeared on the floor, flanking the line.
"I'm not familiar with that language," noted the Hokage.
"Draconic script," said Sakura, craning her neck to read without moving anywhere near that line. "It states that there is a compatibility problem. Do you want this corrected?"
"Yes," grumped Sasuke, rolling his eyes. Honestly, why does this have to be so complicated?
FWASH!
"Oh," said the green-scaled dragon, looking over himself. "Well. That certainly felt odd."
"Lee?" asked Gai, noting the very different voice.
Lee took a deep breath and then blew a stream of green flames. "Gai-sensei. Apparently I can breathe fires of youth."
"I think it's more just plain green-colored fire," noted Gai. "On the other hand Lee, I think you now truly fit the title of 'Konoha's Green Wild Beast'!"
"YOSH!" agreed the dragon.
"Why does his voice sound so... different?" asked Sakura. If you took into account the longer neck and deeper chest, and mouth structures - it still sounded off. Almost like-
"I think I know why," said Sasuke with a certain degree of dread.
"Uh oh," said Naruto, apparently coming to the same conclusion.
"Can you take human form again?" asked the Hokage.
Lee shifted to human form. "I see. This is how you..."
"Lee? You're a girl," said Maito Gai.
Lee felt her chest, checked her crotch, and then straightened up. "I... see."
"I get it," announced Sakura. "The species is defined as one where there are normally 'one to four females' for every male of the species and we had two males and one female. So if this ability is to make the species more viable..."
Hiruzen Sarutobi nodded. "I think I will put off allowing Naruto or Sakura to utilize their choices at the moment. Some tests will be devised for young Lee. Team 7. Your sensei showed up three hours late for your meeting, but you were already gone. I gave him an opportunity to meet with you tomorrow morning at 0600 at Training Ground 3."
"What do we do if he's three hours late for that?" asked Naruto. "I mean, we have to get used to all this stuff now."
"Ah. Well, I would suggest you... surprise him," said the Hokage. "Try not to use the dragonforms though until I've had a chance to talk further with him."
