The Jedi Council had been in the middle of a meeting when they’d felt it. A disturbance in the Force unlike anything felt before. As if, for a split second, every law of nature and physics in the universe ran counter to how it was intended. The disturbance ended as quickly as it began, but in its wake were several new Force presences that were not there a moment before. They stood out like beacons to the masters.
“There are definitely four separate Force signatures, but two of them are… linked somehow,” Master Mace Windu didn’t know how else to describe it.
“Indeed,” Master Yoda confirmed, equally puzzled, “One of these two, filled with much anger and rage.”
“Could it be a Sith?” Master Ki-Adi-Mundi wondered, “We still have one unaccounted for from the Naboo Crisis.”
“Hmm…” Yoda concentrated on the force presence a little more before voicing an opinion, “A Sith, I think not. It’s far less focused. More unbridled, like a storm.”
“It feels as if the second presence is limiting it, restricting it somehow from unleashing its power,” Master Plo Koon added as he focused, “This one is more benign. Fearful, but I don’t sense any maliciousness from it or the other two unlinked ones. I don’t think we’re in any immediate danger.”
“Nevertheless, we should investigate,” Master Saesee Tiin said.
“Indeed,” Yoda agreed, “Bring them here, question them. Find out the cause of the disturbance, we must.”
“I’ll go,” Mace Windu volunteered, rising from his seat, “Even if this dark presence is being restrained somehow by the other one, we shouldn’t take the risk of sending someone not on the Council. Just in case there is danger.”
“I’ll accompany you as well, if you don’t mind,” Plo Koon also stood, “I’m curious to see the nature of this strange Force connection first hand.”
“Go,” Yoda dismissed them, “Await your return, we will.”
The two Jedi Masters departed the Council Chambers and headed for the Temple’s speeder bay. It was clear from the snippets of conversation they overheard as they passed that every Jedi in the Temple had sensed the unusual Force signatures that had appeared out of nowhere. They reached the speeders and were about to set off when a voice called out.
“Master Windu, Master Koon,” Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi disembarked from another speeder he’d just landed. At his side was his twelve year old Padawan, Anakin Skywalker, “We hurried back as fast as we could once we sensed it. Does the Council know anything?”
“That’s what we’re going to find out,” Master Windu replied.
“Can we come?” Anakin inquired eagerly.
“Anakin,” Obi-Wan admonished, “we will do nothing unless the Council orders us. Understand?”
“Yes, Master Obi-Wan,” he answered grudgingly.
“It might be dangerous,” Plo Koon told the young Padawan, “The Council doesn’t want to place one so young in danger,” the Kel Dor’s expression did its best approximation of a human smile, “But I’m sure you’ll hear all about it, after we’ve investigated.”
With that, the two Masters hopped in a speeder and flew in the direction of the disturbance, leaving a curious Obi-Wan and a sulking Anakin behind.
