Shinji's new day: The Codex Cantiones [Episode 28251]

by Shritistrang

'CODEX CANTIONES'

Shinji looked over the book's cover as he sat down at the table, back at Misato's apartment. It looked pretty unobtrusive, with the brown binding and the shimmering pentacle on its front.

For all his life, he hadn't really believed in magic and such... but ever since he became an Eva pilot, he had realized that there is more in the world than meets the eye...

He still didn't believe in true magic, but he had to admit he was intrigued when looking at this book... Carefully, he opened the first page.

He realized that the spells within this book were sorted by type, and every chapter of the book was covering one type of magic...

There was a total of eleven sub-types of magic: Anti-Magic, Controlling, Summoning, Movement, Healing, Perception, Illusions, Battle Magic, Communication, Transformation of Living Beings and Transformation of Inanimate Beings (or simply Transfiguration).

Also, Summoning was subdivided into three subcategories: Summoning of Demons, Elemental Summoning and the 'Seven Spells of Time'...

Shinji took a closer look at the spells within the book... Apparently, all one needed to cast a spell was to know the exact phrase, the magical gestures and the spellcaster had to be able to imagine exactly what the results of his spell should be. Only very few spells required additional 'components'.

More and more, Shinji was tempted to try one of the spells... a very simple one, to see if it would work...

Of course, he knew that this was ridiculous... There was no such thing as magic. But, a tiny part of his brain told him, that if there actually was magic in this world, this would be the perfect chance to find out...

Some noise draw off his attention... He looked to the fridge and saw how Penpen, Misato's pet penguin, was rummaging around the beer cans inside.

Shinji grinned... This was the perfect opportunity to test his new book.

While Shinji searched for a suitable spell, a can of beer slipped out of the penguin's flipper. Penpen let out an annoyed squawk and waddled after the beer can, which was rolling over the kitchen floor.

And then, Shinji pointed at the beer can with his index finger and said:

"MOTORICUS MOTILITICH!"

Penpen nearly fell on his feathered bottom when suddenly, the can floated up into the air. Controlled by Shinji's spell, it circled his head and floated upwards, to the table. Slowly, it descended and landed between the dirty dishes Misato still had to put into the dishwasher.

Penpen gawked and let his beak hang open. But Shinji was nearly as baffled as the penguin... it actually worked?

He looked at the book, then at the beer can and back at the book. He had chosen the typical levitation spell: The Motoricus, from the chapter of Movement spells. According to the book, he could use it to move all kinds of inanimate objects with his thoughts... like he just did with the can.

Ignoring Penpen (who was busy saving the rest of his beer from Shinji's fearsome new powers), he got very excited. Using this book, he could really give his life the thrill that it had lacked so far...

Excited, he thumbed through the book's pages. Now, what type of spell should he try next...?
