Shinji stood over the kitchen table as he worked, making quick glances to the open pages of the Hentainomicon. He had in front of him, a large, shallow, bowl to which he was conducting the steps to complete the spell. The old book was propped up on the table, laying open to the pages which was marked ‘Art of Scrying’.
The Art of Scying: A spell that allows its caster to look at the land that lies far beyond the horizon, locate lost people, or glimpse into places he doesn’t belong.
‘It seems like a spell that’ll cause little damage, but it sure takes a lot of work to make.’ Shinji wiped his brow as he continued to work, being careful to add the exact amount of components.
“Wark?”
PenPen watched from by the doorway as Shinji grew near the end of the list of the spell components.
“Yes. Almost finished.”
The penguin padded off to do other things, his interest in watching Shinji working had slipped away.
Shinji was about to add the final ingredient as the catalyst, but something caught his eye. After rereading the instructions, Shinji found a footnote that recommended a large, open space to start the reaction.
“It should’ve said so, before I started this.” Shinji sighed as he lifted the bowl to carry it into the living room. He hastily cleared off the coffee table in front of the television, getting a squawk from PenPen, who didn’t like being pushed off his new TV watching spot. Grunting, Shinji set the heavy bowl down on the table, wincing as a little bit of its contents sloshed over the side.
“I hope that doesn’t cause anything bad.” Shinji said to PenPen. From the couch, the penguin went back to watching his roommate perform this experiment with the magic contained in the Hentainomican.
Standing over the bowl of swirling liquid, Shinji held the last remaining ingredient to complete the spell. Shinji gulped, out of nervousness, and drop the last piece of the potion into the bowl.
The mixture began to steam, and Shinji, having been standing over the bowl when the reaction started, inhaled some. It reeked. It reeked badly. Shinji stumbled backwards onto the couch, next to PenPen, coughing, and he hoped that the stuff wasn’t as toxic as it smelled. A quiet squawk from his feathered companion brought Shinji back to reality. As he looked up, he realized that the steam from the potion wasn’t dissipating, but, instead, it clouded together in the air like a globe, glowing like a willow-the-wisp. Shinji, as he watched the cloud of mist, felt his hand tingle. Looking down at his hands, Shinji found that they were glowing the same way the cloud was. PenPen squawked, again, and Shinji look up again at the orb of mist, and saw that it was beginning to clear, only at the center. Shinji and PenPen stared in awe at the clearing mist, but their looks of amazement quickly turned to disappointment when the center cleared to only display static, like on a television.
“I don’t under stand what we’re not seeing here.” Shinji said to himself as he tried rereading the section of the Hentainomican again to try and understand the results. Then it hit him. “Of course! The spell doesn’t know what we want to see yet.”
Then PenPen slapped him for his oversight.
‘How anti-climatic’, the slightly annoyed bird thought.
Shinji thought about what he wanted to see.
Looking around Misato’s flat, Shinji was amazed that he pulled off his experiment off without anyone interrupting him. Where was everybody?
“I..” Shinji started to voice his thoughts, “…want to see where Misato and the others are.”
As soon as Shinji was done speaking, the static clouded over. Shinji thought that the spell died. But as soon as he started to snap his fingers with impatience, the cloud began to clear up at the center again.
Shinji heard running water, and thought that PenPen went to take a bath, but seeing the penguin sitting next to him dispelled that thought.
Shinji turned back to the cloud, seeing that it was finally done clearing. He saw Misato’s face, close up, taking up most of the cloud. Listening closely, Shinji hears someone, maybe an Eva technician, talking with Shinji’s guardian. The image floating in the air continued to zoom out, until Shinji realized a small detail that had him pinching his nose shut to avoid a staining his white shirt with blood that soon would’ve been shooting out of his nose. Misato, every one for that matter, was completely, one hundred percent naked! As the pictures eased back even more, Shinji now under stood what the running water was. He was looking into the women’s shower rooms inside the NERV command center, definitely somewhere he didn’t belong!
After wiping the blood from under his nose, Shinji…
