“Where are you going?” the old codger demanded of the famous gunslinger.
Vash paid him no heed and walked to the center of the town. In the square, in the center of a screaming crowd was a stake where a bundle of kindling had been set up, and onto it was tied a petite young girl with vibrant red hair.
He could easly see from where he was standing that she was drugged, probelly to keep her from using her power to protect herlself.
“She’s pretty,” Vash mumbeled to himself.
“Do not be fooled. She’s a devil and a witch,” snarled a man who was standing by her.
Vash looked over and asked, “What has she done?”
“She carries a the taint of the devil in her blood? What more does one need? Evil must be crushed!”
Vash looked over to the man, to the girl, at to the cheering crowd. It was an old fashion witch burning. Nothing more, nothing less.
Vash the Stampede, removed his trademark yellow glasses and place them onto his face, which had hardened into a mask of cold determination.
He quickly glanced over the assembly. A large group of people. Looked to be unarmed, but who knows. Scattered around the square were a collection of guards, most had spears but two had firearms. Too easy.
Vash pushed himself past the crowd and too the stake in the center. It was unguarded, as they did not expect anyone to free her.
He walk up to girl and looked at her. her face was covered with fresh scrapes and bruises as if she had been beaten, her eyes were glazed from the drugs, and her lips were parched with thirst.
From his side he withdrew his canteen, and to the shock of the gasping crowd, brought it to her mouth. It shocked them for in the wasteland fresh water was precious. It was not something just given away.
She drank deep and hard. Behind the fog covering her eyes he saw strength and determination. When he withdrew the canteen, in a voice slurred by the drug, she whispered, “Help me...”
Vash smiled. That was the idea.
With a flash of steel he kicked upwards, his boot knife slashing through the ropes that held the girl.
She fell forward into his arms.
He ran like lighting.
Bang. Bang.
The two rifle toting guards were disabled as bullets struck their shoulders.
Bang. Bang.
Two guards jumped out of his path in shock as their spears were turned into staffs.
With the girl in his arms he jumped onto the bike, and tore off. Unfortunately, the gates were closed
Bang. Bang.
Using his last two bullets, he destroyed a sigh, causing it to fall back and hit the ground creating an impromptu ramp.
He struck the rap fast and true sailing over the walls and onto freedom.
