Nuclear Fusion: Not the right canine [Episode 29515]

by fenrisswolf

"Damm it! I can't believe it took 3 more of our MRE's, and 2 liters of water to get that greedy old man to give us directions to this stupid town!" said an irritated Rally.

"And it only took us two days to get here, too!" answered the ever chipper May. "How's our cash supply? We'll have to re-stock on fuel and supplies here."

The town wasn't much, just some remnants of a suburban desert settlement fenced off from the rest of the world with rock walls, old bricks and barbed wire.
It wasn't too secure against large threats, but a town this size would not have much enough wealth to warrant a big offensive anyway.
The local militia seemed relatively well organized, however, and a sign near the main entrance seemed to indicate an anomaly: a baseball game was apparently going to be held there within the next few days. How a place in the middle of nowhere like this managed to maintain such a luxury was unknown. The presence of a small bank, a general store/gas station and a few saloons/motels was also noted, but as more of an expected thing for a town like this.

On any case, neither of them were here for fun & games, no matter how much May might argue. They were here on the trail of a very dangerous criminal on the run from the authorities, so they had little time for leisure. It was time to head to the general store and re-supply, as well as get whatever information may be available on the where-abouts of Inu-Yasha.
The store looked much like most of it's kind around this area. It was a combination of a market store, gas station and rumor mill.

The woman behind the counter, a freckled, red-headed human wearing open toe sandals, probably the store owner, greeted them warmly.
"Morning! Come here from out of town to watch the game? It's a good thing you got here this early, rooms sell out mighty quick night before game day, and it'd be a shame to have two girls camping out on the street in this town.
Mind-you the Scouts do a good job of keeping the peace around here, so you'd be alright. Not too confy, but safe."

"Sorry m'am, but we're here on business," replied Rally. "I'm Rally Vincent and this here's my partner Minnie May. We're bounty hunters. We are looking for two people, a canine wearing red robes and carrying a large sword, and a teenage girl traveling with him. I don't suppose you've seen anyone like them?"

"Can't seem to recall anyone like that, sorry. If you are looking for someone, you're best bet is to deal with Ace, if you can get a hold of him. He's the leader of our local Scouts. Just a word of warning, he's a great guy, but a bit cautious when dealing with bastets, seems he's had a history of disagreements with them. He's had a tough life, so try to cut him a little slack, OK?"

Great, that's all I need, tought Rally. Another bigot to deal with. Why can't I deal with a decent guy every once in a while? "I'll keep it in mind. Thanks!"

"Don't worry too much about it. Like I said, he's decent. I just didn't want you to harm our star outfielder before the big game even starts, you know.
About your supplies... I'll get someone to see if we got more of what you asked for in the back. Marcie!"

"Yes, sir?" said a bespectacled face popping out of a door near the back of the store. "Did you call for me, sir?"

Walking up to the young woman revealed behind the door, the owner handed her Rally's re-supply list. "Marcie, I need you to check our supplies and see if we have the rest of the stuff on this list. Don't worry about the checked off stuff, they already got it, or we don't carry it here. If we don't have the other stuff, see if we got anything else that might do, instead."

"As you wish, sir." and with a brief salute, Marcie vanished bahind the door.

With a pause, the red-head adressed the empty doorway. "And, Marcie? Remember what I told you?"

"Not to salute or call you 'sir' anymore, sir? I mean sorry, sir... Ehm, err... I won't do it again, si... sorry, si.., sooorry!" By the young woman's increassingly embarrased tone, it was obvious that this was an ongoing issue between the two of them.

Sigh. "Marcie's a nice kid, a little too polite at times, and I think she probably spent too long among the militia and it addled her brain, but she gets the job done. She'll find what you need, and have it all ready and organized for you soon. By the way, I forgot to introduce myself. Peppermint Patty's the name, pleased to meet'cha!
