He didn't know that some of the materia were level based. He didn't know that Jiminy Cricket might reappear despite Genma trying to squish the insectile conscience. He didn't know that when he'd gotten more experienced he'd be able to summon specific beings with a few limitations/provisos/quid pro quos, etc.

What the limits and proviso and such were - that still remained to be seen. Except for one. He could only use Summon a few times a day and it tended to wear him out fairly quickly.
Genma sulked, trying to figure out how to get those tattoos off his son. He told himself he just didn't want Ranma to be mistaken for a Yakuza. That was all. The situation was not out of his control.
Over the next few days, Ranma practiced with his tattoos and learned more. Another effect was that all this practice was building up his chi reserves faster. One of the Djinni (the nice one with the really long hair) instructed him on meditation exercises that would allow him to recharge faster.
Genma sulked some more.
"So ya wanna be a hero, kid?" asked an overweight cigar-smoking satyr on Tuesday. Followed by Ranma exercising a lot of different ways and learning some new techniques.
"To be a man," said a small fire-breathing dragon on Wednesday, followed by more instructions on Chinese fighting techniques.
"Heheheheheh," laughed a little six legged blue critter on Thursday, before instructing Ranma on how to impersonate Elvis and on the value of friends.
"C'mon! Bouncing is good exercise and what Tiggers do bestest!" advised an animated plushtoy on Friday.
Swimming lessons from a mermaid on Saturday.
A lion instructing Ranma on knowing when to practice pride and when to practice humility - Sunday.
Genma was fed up and more by Monday when he noticed something unusual occurring during his morning spar with Ranma.
Ranma was moving faster, not tiring as quickly, and actually managed to land a fairly painful kick to a tender spot just below his ribs.
At which point Genma began thinking of this less as a horrible accident derailing the training and more as something he could use to further his own designs.
Jiminy made a couple more appearances, but once Ranma learned that he could summon a specific character from the second materia, he ended up spending most of his time with:
