Ryoko's origin was a mystery, her species unique. She was an amalagam of several different species from across the galaxy. A true testament to the theory of hybrid vigor. Or, at least, so it seemed.
A little more than two-thousand years ago, the Akuneko had crossed the sea of dead space from their galaxy to the galaxy of Jurai. In that time, little was seen of the invaders save their ships. Of those that now lived at the Masaki shrine, only Washu, Yohko, Ryoko and Ayeka were alive. Only Washu and Yosho remembered it.
No one knew why they came, only that they came like locusts on huge carriers with swarms of fighter craft to face against the Jurai battleships. They had been driven back, but not without heavy cost, and most thought that was the last any would ever see of them.
The recovery of one anomalous child from a faulty and freezing escape pod was generally overlooked among the assorted tragedy. People were amazed that she had survived, but that was it. She was sent to an orphanage for a time, until she ran away and had the luck to stumble across Ayeka of Jurai.
Ayeka and Ryoko may have fought everytime they came near each other, but they always were near each other. If anything they bickered like close sisters and up until Ryoko "turned pirate." An event that had more to do with her heritage as the last of a clan of deposed kings and queens and less to do with her choice.
He had been the first assassin to turn up, and she had been forced to deal with him and had failed to do it quietly. Instead of trying to explain as the authorities came, she'd run, and been firmly placed on the list of violent criminals.
Right now, Ryoko wasn't remembering the succession of assassins that had forged her from a minor con artist into a warrior. Right now she was thinking of her earliest memories.
She was thinking of being stuffed into an escape pod screaming for her parents as something or somebody stormed down the cooridors of the passenger ship they had been on at the time. She remembered seeing her mother and father cut down as the escape pod launched away. She was thinking of the long space before she was rescued, when the life support system on her escape pod had partially failed and the cold of vaccuum inescapably seeped into her tiny shelter.
