Akane sighed, stepped over a small stream that was now heading down the hall and towards the kitchen, sat herself and her pet pig down at the table for breakfast and picked up her favorite red chopsticks. Pausing a moment before she began eating, she thought Why does everything have to be so crazy? She looked out at the insanity before her and said to nobody in particular “I wish things here were like in those storybooks I used to read as a child. Like in fairy tales.”
Suddenly, it got eerily quiet. Akane couldn’t hear Ranma and her father sparring anymore, nor anything else except the stillness of an empty house. She slowly looked up from her miso soup and saw…nothing. No one was there. No panda, no Ranma, no family, no one. Just her. Turning her head, she saw the saucer that she had put down for P-chan, but he was gone too.
“This isn’t funny, everyone.” She said, a little uncertainly. No answer.
Then, out of the corner of her eye, she spied something giving off a faint glow and turned her head to look at it. It was a book. A big book. On a stand. Shaking a bit, Akane stood up and went over to the book. The cover was beautiful. Rich leather, fine detail work, gold lettering, it said “Grim Faerie Tales.”
Nervously, afraid it would suck her in or something, Akane opened the cover. Beautiful face plates represented the Tendo home. Turning further, she found the title page, which read:
Dedicated to Akane Tendo, without whose wish this never could have happened
On the next page was a Table of contents, listing stories about her family, but all in fairy tale form. Kasumi, the homemaker, was listed as the Cinderella story, Nabiki the one interested in money, was the Rumplestiltskin story. Interesting. It seemed that they were matching the personalities at least somewhat. What’s more, on the page, next to each story title and blurb was a small picture of the person in cartoon form, just like you would see on tv. Hah. Akane thought. Imagine my family having their life turned into some sort of cartoon. and she dismissed the thought immediately.
At the bottom of the page, there was a message. A warning? Whatever, it read “Read the story, the final outcome will resolve.” Now what did that mean? Resolves what? she thought. What really concerned her was who had done this, why they had done it and how she could get everything back to the way it was before she had opened her mouth. Then her gaze fell on the message again and it seemed a little clearer. She knew what she had to do. The only choice was to plunge ahead. Looking at the Table of Contents, Akane took a deep breath and chose her first story:
