Grim Tales: Still warm from the oven [Episode 37566]

by Ryoko

As soon as Akane turned the book open to the story she wanted the first four words on the page seemed to glow “Once upon a time…” and then faded. She began to read… Ranma and his father were doing their morning ritual sparring throughout the Tendo household, invariably landing in the koi pond and causing their curses to go into effect. As she emerged, her father came at her with a wet, furry kick, but she was easily able to dodge, as his glasses had fallen off during his transformation to a panda and he could see only half as well. The fighting continued for several minutes, until she heard Kasumi call everyone to breakfast. Calling out to her father, she taunted “Y’cant get me, pop. I’m too fast for ya. I think I’ll have your breakfast as well as mine this morning!” and ran towards the table, where she was stopped by Kasumi.

“Oh, Ranma, I wanted to let you know. The hot water is off again. I did manage to save some for you from cooking this morning, though.” Kasumi held up a kettle that felt as if it was about half full.

Ranma quickly grabbed it, saying “I’m not gonna go to school like this, so I’d better use it while it’s still hot.” Lifting it up high, Ranma poured it over her head and was transformed…

Into a large cookie. “Gaaah!” The kettle fell onto the floor with a loud clang!, startling everyone into looking up at the source of all the noise. In the middle of the room was now a large, four foot tall cookie, about half a foot in thickness, and relatively flexible, as if it had just come out of the oven. White icing decorated the front, with eyes, nose, mouth and hair represented and moving with general fluidity. Icing at the cuffs and ankles and waist gave the indication of clothing, and three small yellow gumdrops on the shirt area approximated where the buttons of Ranma’s favorite red shirt were placed.

Slowly coming out of his shock, Ranma-necco (AN: heh heh forgive me my horrible pun) began to move his limbs, as if testing them. Arms move, good. Legs move, good. Legs, not skirt. Well, at least the hot water turned him back into a male in the process. Head move? Well, only somewhat, but still that’s good. Pulling an arm towards his face, he noticed, aside from the squiggly line indicating where clothing and skin met, that he had no fingers anymore, just a short thumb. It was like having thick mittens on. He wondered how he’d be able to pick anything up. Bending down to try, he was suddenly interrupted by Nabiki reaching out and grabbing a small bit of his leg.

“Mmmm, Ranma. Gingerbread. Tasty, too.” Nabiki’s eyes gleamed in amusement. She reached out for another piece.

“Hey, cut that out! That hurt, ya know!” Ranma looked down and saw a small chunk now gone from his left thigh and started to get concerned. “Oh no, what if I start to leave crumbs? I’ll just fall apart and there’ll be bits of me all over…!” A panicked look got in his eye.

“Don’t worry, Ranma. We’ll have eaten you way before that can happen.” The unnatural gleam was back in Nabiki’s eye, and she was teasing him, but in his shocked state, Ranma did not recognize it as so.

“Eat me? What? Is that all I am? Just something to be devoured?” He looked wildly around and said, “I don’t think so! I’m going somewhere safe until I can figure out what’s wrong with me and how I can get back to being a normal guy again.” With that, the artopomorphic creation (AN: artos is bread in Greek. Closest I could get to cookie) made an impressive leap for a recently baked item and took off.

Akane turned to her older sister angrily. “Nabiki! You didn’t have to frighten him away! I mean, come on, this is Ranma we’re talking about. It’s just another part of his curse. Somehow he’ll figure a way out of it and we’ve got to be there for him.”

Nabiki turned to her little sister, her eyes still gleaming. “Have you tried this?” she asked, offering the rest of the piece she took out of Ranma’s leg.

Akane shook her head as she accepted it. “Well, no, but…” her words trailed off and that same gleam came into her eyes. “You know, Nabiki, it is really good. I think that we should go after Ranma. Purely to help him and make sure he’s safe, of course.”

Nabiki nodded. “My thoughts exactly.”

Meanwhile, Ranma was doing his best to hightail it out of the Tendo home and find some place where he could be safe and appreciated.

The Nekohanten, of course. he thought. Shampoo will surely take me in and that old ghoul will no doubt know what this is all about, if she hasn’t been the one to plan it already. While he wasn’t getting the same speed and abilities that he had when human, he was still able to go at a pretty good clip, and was eating up the distance between the two places. Yuck, I don’t like that term, eating up. he thought. Luckily the streets were empty, as it was early morning and people hadn’t yet started their commute. In a few minutes he saw his destination, and picked up speed. He would be there, and maybe even find a nice bowl of ramen waiting. Wait, could he eat anymore or would that ramen just make him soggy and more prone to breaking? With these worries adding to his already jumbled mind, he picked up speed as he neared the entrance to the Nekohanten.

In a distant reality, Akane turned the page to see what occurred next. Damn, they always pause at the interesting bits, don’t they? she thought.

Ranma…
