"Well, if it's old, it's valuable," began Nabiki. "Tell you what, Saotome, I'll knock 8000yen off your debt for the box."
Cologne rapped Ranma's hands as he reached for it. "Son in law, whoever you end up marrying will have to be the one controlling the finances or you'll never be able to afford to eat past the first month."
"Damn. Never should have brought this thing here," grumbled Ranma.
"What if it contains a cure?" Cologne pointed out. "Or something really powerful. For 10,000 years or more - whatever has been sleeping inside this box has never seen light. Even after all my own examinations, I could find no way to actually open it. What looks like the lid is actually part of box itself."
"So there may be nothing at all in there, or it may be dust," speculated Nabiki. Though the thought of it being gold was definitely a plus.
The box itself was elaborately carved, made of some black/gray material, and about the length of an adult arm, about three hands wide, and two hands deep.
"It's not that heavy," said Ranma, trying to figure out what could be inside.
"Do you recognize the material, Ranma? Neither do I and I'm a lot more experienced in that regard." Cologne tapped the odd box. "In some ways it is like stone, in others it is like metal. Very curious. Especially this detail here."
Ranma peered at it and then blinked. "WHATTHEHEY?!"
"Saotome?" Nabiki looked at the relief then at Ranma. Same pigtail and usual outfit. "What are you doing on a 10,000 year old box?"
"Hell if I know," admitted Ranma. "It looks like I'm touching this section of the box like so..."
FSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
As the box lid began to shift and old vapors seemed to shoot out, Akane decided to have the last word. "Ranma you... IDIOT!"
When the fog cleared...
