Knuckles caught his breath as the masonry wall finished crumbling in front of him. "What is wrong with that bat?!" he grumbled as he stepped through the rubble. "Doesn't she know when to give up?" The crimson Echidna grumbled in frustrasion. Ever since the incedent with Shadow on the ARK, he found himself dealing with a certain thieving Bat on a monthly basis, snatching the Master Emerald, and leading him on a merry chase to different places around the world. He always managed to get it back, but sooner or later, far sooner than he normally preferred, she's be back again for another wild Bat chase.
That little voice in the back of his mind that kind of enjoyed these little trips was quickly supressed.

Rouge smiled to herself as she ran down the stone-lined corridor. Knuckles was a nice guy, but he was way too single-minded. These little games of hers made a good distraction, but it was time to finally "let" him catch her, for better or for worse.
But first, she had to find the right spot. She had spent time in these ruins on a previous mission for the President, and found one of the most beautiful artifacts she had ever seen in her life. She had decided to seal the chamber, keeping it as her personal treasure. She wanted him to see it, too.
Stopping in front of a bare wall, she dropped off the final clue: A Chaos Emerald, one of the ones taken from GUN's Vault. She had "forgotten" to mention them in her report on the incedent, and the destruction of the island base meant that any record of her break-in had been destroyed. If they were as such unclaimed, she may as well give them a good home.
Rouge flew down the corridor and into a massive chamber. Six tall jade obelisks, inlaid with gold, stood along the parimeter of the room. On the far side was a massive ring of onyx, set with gemstones of various sizes and colors. The thief in her always drooled at the sight of it, but something inside her told her that to desectate the ring would be... wrong, somehow.
Unnoticed to her, the Master Emerald began to glow ever so slightly.

Knuckles grinned as another wall fell to his fists. Rouge and the Master Emerald were close, he could feel them.
One final punch, and the wall fell in. He found himself looking down a long corridor. He looked at the Chaos Emerald in his hand. It was beginning to glow bright enough to light his way all by itself.
Knuckles frowned. Something was wrong. He pushed it into the back of his mind. All he wanted to do was get his Emerald back and... he quickly pushed that thought out of his head. Where did that come from?
"Rouge!" Knuckles cried as he burst into the room. He found the lightly-furred Bat kneeling in front of the Master Emerald. "... What is going on here?"
"I-I don't know!" Rouge said, confused. "As soon as I brought it out, it just..." Her explanation was cut off as a loud roar shook the entire chamber. Rouge turned towards the ring, as it suddenly lurched to life, spinning with increasing speed.
Knuckles shut his eyes as the glow from the Master and Chaos Emeralds grew to blinding proportions. He looked up at the ring, barely feeling the Chaos Emeralds wrenched from his hands, moving to circle the Master Emerald. Every line and crevice in the room lit up as the roar grew louder. Energy spewed from the ring-structure, leaping from the Chaos Emeralds to the Master, with Rouge caught in the middle.
Without thinking he leapt, gliding over to the now panicking Rouge. His hands reached hers just as the world around them vanished into white light. They felt a long, but not entirely uncomfortable, squeezing sensation, along with a feeling of being propelled, before landing with an impact... somewhere...
So where have our heroes ended up?
